Hello!

I am descended from John Cohagen (b. VA 1812) and Mary Jane Ashbaugh (b. Ohio 1821). They are my great-great grandparents, through their son, James Saxony Cohagen (and then his daughter, Bertha Etta Cohagen Wade, my grandmother.)

I checked my info and I don't show a Walter W. Cohagen in my records, so I'm not sure which of the Cohagen brothers he is from - and am, therefore, not yet sure how we are connected.

I am currently trying to reconcile John and Mary's death dates with information on some old family photos I inherited from my aunt. Info from several sources would indicate that they both died of typhyoid fever, one in 1871 and the other in 1872. However, one large family group photo that I have was taken in Ohio about 1880 (my grandmother is in it as a 3-yr-old) and it looks as if John and Mary are the ones seated at the center of the photo. (And, if its not them, I have no clue who else it could be.)

In another photo, taken in 1900 - also showing an extended family group - it looks as if Mary Jane Ashbaugh Cohagen is seated at the center.

Its very puzzling. I invite you to take a look at the photos I've attached to the Cohagens in my tree, and if you have information that might clarify who some of the people in them are, I'd welcome your feedback!

Recently I found a document showing that Aquilla Cohagen of Virginia purchased land in Ohio in 1825 - and I believe he may be John Cohagen's father. However, there are other Cohagen families in Ohio in the early-mid 1800s and I haven't sorted it out with any degree of certainty, yet.

Hope we are able to help each other with this line.

Best regards,
Betty

Dear Betty: I was so happy to get your message and your connection to the Cohagen Clan. First off, I don't think we are a part of the Walter Cohagen line. My husband, Charles Cohagen is a descendant of John & Mary Jane. John is his great grandfather. One of John's sons (there were 11 children!) Franklin W. is his grandfather, (b. 1854, Fairfield Cty, Ohio. d. 1938 in Toledo, Ohio, and was living with his son, Clarence L. Cohagen (b 1892, d. 1965 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. where my husband and I were living at that time.
Your death dates for John and Mary Jane are the same as I have. I have no pictures of them, but have a copy of a picture of John's headstone (which I will try to attach as a copy.)
I have been in contact with a BStewart2@juno.com who tells me that John's father's name was Thomas Cohagen (b. 1780-90)and Catherine Fling.(I will attempt to attach a copy). Also DWheatonJr@aol.com from rootsweb who has hinted that the Cohagen or Geoghegan line can be traced back to Ireland, but nothing definite yet.
I am sorry I cannot identify anyone in your pictures, but the generation we are familiar with were in the Fairfield County, Ohio, area in the towns of Basil/Baltimore, Reynoldsburg, etc.
Perhaps between all of us, we can get this family tree complete. I hope I have been of some help, but you have been moreso. Please let me know whether or not these attachments have come through.(
Happy searching,
Joanne Cohagen (wife of Charles)

P.S. Can you send me your email address, in case I 'm not able to send these via a post (I am still not fully computer literate)

Hi Joanne,
You can reach me at bettycrenshaw@yahoo.com
Thanks.
I also have a copy of the photo of John Cohagen's headstone and have attached it to my John Cohagen in my ancestry.com tree. I've also recorded his death date as 26 Dec 1871, but, I just have this nagging doubt about that info because of the photos. So, I'm trying to see if there's any other evidence to support what I think I'm seeing in the family picture. May not take me anywhere, but I have to try.
Thank you for the other contact leads, also. I appreciate it.
Best,
Betty
