Anyone researching the COGBILLs in Chesterfield County, Virginia (near Richmond) or COGBILLs who fought in the Civil War, will be interested in an obituary that appeared in the TIMES of Richmond on April 13, 1900 (page 8, column 1). It has a sketch of M. A. Cogbill, former Clerk of the Chesterfield County Court. Although he and his wife, Emma V. (Perdue) Moody, had no children, the article mentions other family and friends. I am granddaughter of Nathan Herbert Cogbill of Chesterfield Va. His father, Nathan Hale Cogbill, and mother, Mary Lucy Jane Winfree Cogbill, died when he and his sister Mollie Endorra Cogbill were quite young. Marcus Aurelius "Pa Mac" Cogbill took them in and raised them as his children at Magnolia Grange. Pa Mac was a wonderful man and Chesterfield mourned his passing. Please view my tree under Cogbill/Cheatham/Terrell/Nunn on Ancestry. The Chesterfield Historical Society is planning an exhibit on Genealogy featuring the Cogbill Family Tree at its Museum on August 15. 2014. Contact the CHS for more information.

I was able to visit the Chesterfield Historical Society years ago, when it was still in the Court House. They have an informative site at
http://chesterfieldhistory.com/
........ That site has a photo of Magnolia Grange, which is a lovely house, and "the only historic home open to the public in Chesterfield County, depicting early 19th century life." Magnolia Grange and the rest of Chester are well worth a visit from anyone with connections in Chesterfield County or an interest in history. ............
Unfortunately, your Cogbill/Cheatham/Terrell/Nunn family tree is accessible only to people with an Ancestry membership. I will gladly take a look if I ever become a member again. I do not have any COGBILLs in my direct ancestry, but they were an important family with many connections to other Chesterfield County families. For example, I am very slightly related to Joseph Beverly Vaden, who married Susan "Sue" E. Cogbill. ..............
Best, Laura

Yes Susan was daughter of AE Cogbill, Commonwealths Attorney in Chesterfield. He was son of Thomas Cogbill and Lucy Boisseau. The Vaden's too have served the county. Keep searching.
