Re: family fued cogan,decogan
Hi I am Samantha De Cogan, granddaughter of Samuel Milo De Cogan. I was interested to seee another person with the same sirname because it is so very rare!
I heard that the family came over with William the Conqueror and were given land and a title (Cogan) after serving in his army, hence the De as in de (french!)
Not sure how true it is but very interesting all the same!

Re: family fued cogan,decogan
My understanding is that the Cogans did come from Normandy with William the Conqueror (which explains the 'de' in your name). History tells us that Milo de Cogan was involved in the invasion of Ireland in the 1170s and stayed here, being given lands in Cork.
Incidentally, I am Irish, but my family name, when spelled in the Irish language is 'de Cogain' - obviously a leftover of the Norman origins of the name, as well as the name of the town in Wales that Milo de Cogan came from (called 'Cogan': Milo de Cogan is of course, Milo 'of' Cogan in the English translation).

Re: family fued cogan,decogan
My great grandmother was Margaret Cogan who was born in Donoughmore Parish, County Cork in 1812, father's name was John. She married Michael Kirby in 1843 and they had a son Patrick in 1844. Are you related to this family?

Re: family fued cogan,decogan
Hi:
My great great grandfather was Michael Kirby. He had a son, Patrick, who was born in County Cork, Donoughmore Township in 1844. Michael was married to Margaret Cogan also born in Cork in 1812. So I guessing that Michael was born circa 1812, but I do not know where he was born and am looking for information. Any connection?

Re: family fued cogan,decogan
My grandfather, John Cogan, was also born in Donoughmore,County Cork in 1878. His father, Jeremiah, was living there in the early 1860's. I haven't been able to find Jeremiah's parents, but it is possible that they were from the same area. I don't know if there is a relationship, but it is possible.

Re: family fued cogan,decogan
Hi:
Margaret Cogan born 1812, daughter of John Cogan and Honora Keeffe in Donoughmore, County Cork. Margaret married Michael Kirby and had a son, Patrick born in Donoughmore 1843. I don't know when Patrick Kirby came to the US, but all his children were born here (1880-1893). Margaret Cogan b.1812 had a brother, John. Your line may come from him. If so, we would share great, great, great grandparents, John Cogan and Honora Keeffe. Let me know what you think.

Re: family fued cogan,decogan
Hi, Katie my Patrick Kirby never left Ireland to my knowledge, and I have found him at age 45 or 47 living on the townland of Shanagh, evidenced by the 1911 Irish census, with his wife and four children. Two of his children left for the States when they were in their late teens or early twenties, one died in Ireland on or before her 30th birthday, and the issue of the other son now lives on the townland. How I wish I could gain some information, but I shall be forced to keep looking, but I am soooo grateful to you for your kindness. If I can be of any help to you, just let me know.Happy holidays! N
