Hi again:

You have a Patrick Kirby in your family tree??!! If he was listed on the 1911 census at age 45-47, he would have been born c.1866. My Patrick was born 1843, appx 23 years older. He could have had a wife and children (your Patrick)in Ireland and then left for the USA w/o his family. He died in the US at in 1895 at 52 y.o.

Thanks, Katie, for your response. I know that my Patrick Kirby never left Ireland, but i think you have the d.o.b correct. I'll just have to keep hunting. So kind of you to try to help.

Hi:

Just had a chance to look at your note again. My great, great grandmother was Margaret Cogan, born 1812 in Donoughmore, County Cork. I'm wondering if Jeremiah, born c 1850, could have been the son of Margaret's brother. If both families were from Donoughmore, they have to be related. How did your Cogan family make its way to Colorado?

Jeremiah was born, according to the 1880 census, in 1839. He married first Mary Sullivan and had 3 children. After her death he married Ann Walsh in 1868. They had Ann, Jeremiah, Ann, William, and John. They immigrated in 1882/1883. Ann had brothers living in Colorado Springs at the time and the story is that they helped Jeremiah get a job on the railroad. They lived at the section house on the top of the mountain where Climax mine is located (elevation is about 11,000 ft and they spent one horrible winter there). They then ran the section house at Nathrop, Colorado. Jeremiah bought a ranch in 1888.

Oops - the census with Jeremiah's birthdate was not the 1880 census. It was the 190o census.

Hi,
I just found a page that my cousin had photocopied several years ago when he was in Ireland. It is one page from index of births of Cogans that included part of my family from Ballyvodane, Donoughmore. Included on the page are 3 children born to John Cogan and Hanora Keeffe. They are 1) Margaret, born 14 Sept 1812; 2) William, born 08 August 1816; 3) Mary, born 29 Sept 1819. They may have had more children who were baptized in another church, as I have found with my family. I hope that this information helps. Also, I have found my grandfather John's grandfather. He was Jeremiah Cogan (1785 - 1870) and Honora McCarthy.
