I'm descended from Coffaro's from San Giovanni Gemini and Raffadali,,Agrigento, Sicily. We are probably related to Coffaro's from Cammarata as well since it's next door to San Giovanni Gemini.
My great-granmother was Giovanna Coffaro Guagenti, daughter of Vincenzo Coffaro and Filomena Fradella. Her husband was Carmelo Guagenti. Giovanna was born in Raffadali in 1875. Her family moved to San Giovanni Gemini and she was married there in 1894. In some records, I've seen the name spelled as Cuffaro. She emigrated to the States in the early 1900's and spent the rest of her life in Bayonne, N.J., where she died in 1932.
When researching my San Giovanni ancestors, I came across a younger sister to my great-grandfather, Carmelo Guagenti. She was Maria Santa Guagenti. Her husband was Vincenzo Catalano, son of Salvatore Catalano and Nazarena Schiacchitano. This family also ended up in Bayonne, N.J. They later changed the last name to Catalone and finally Cataline.
If any of this is familiar to anyone, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Dominick, Yes! This is familiar. We are researching the same records, in fact, I have your great-grandparents marriage record, a passenger record, a death record for a Giuseppe Guagenti (2-yrs) son of Carmelo and Giovanna Coffaro Guagenti, a death record for a Carmela Cuffaro who is the daughter of your grandparents. She was married to Onofrio Lombardo (they lived at the same address as my grandparents), and probably several others (I will check all of my records).
Cuffaro is the original spelling of the name. It would be great to compare information. You can email me or post a message to this site.

How nice to hear from you. Yes, indeed, it looks like we're researching the same records.
I have copies of the documents from the LDS films for all the people you mention. The young boy, Giuseppe Guagenti, who died at 2 years old was born in Elizabeth, NJ. My great-grandmother, Giovanna Coffaro Guagenti used to travel frequently back and forth to Sicily and had some of her children in the states and some in Sicily.
Carmela Coffaro was a younger sister to Giovanna (I guess she would be my 'great-grand aunt.' I thought her husband's name from my reading of her death record and marriage record was Onofrio Zimbardo, not Lombardo. Their marriage date was 8 Sep 1892 in San Giovanni Gemini. I saw the name Zimbardo on both Carmela's death certificate (29 Dec 1908) and the marriage document. There were other Zimbardo's in the San Giovanni civil archives that I've seen. But late 19th century Italian script is difficult at best to decipher.
I'm curious to know who your grandparents were that lived at the same address as Carmela and Onofrio. I know so little about my Coffaro relatives and am very excited to be talking to you about them. Until I started digging through LDS films, my family was unaware that Giovanna even had any siblings. In addition to Carmela, I discovered the death record of another sister, Francesca Coffaro, who died in 1889 at the age of 7. She was born in Aquaviva Platani, not far from San Giovanni Gemini. My great-grandmother, Giovanna, was born in Raffadali and I have the marriage record of her parents, Vincenzo Cuffaro and Filomena Fradella, who were married in Raffadali in 1872. Vincenzo was the son of Francesco Cuffaro and Giovanna Burgio. Filomena was the daughter of Gaspare Fradella and Carmela Gramglia.
Family legend said that Vincenzo worked for the railroad in Sicily, but I didn't believe it until I saw his name on Giovanna and Carmelo Guagenti's marriage document. Vincenzo' s occupation was listed as ' railway guard'. Also, my great-aunts were under the impression that the Cuffaro family originated from Genoa but I have no proof of this. The fact that Vincenzo's daughters were born in different towns might be explained by the fact that by working for the railroad, he moved around a lot.
Please let me know if any of this relates to facts and information you may have. It would be nice to find a family member!

Hello Dominick, I too am very excited to be in contact with you about our family link. I believe that once we find the connection we will fit many pieces of the puzzle together. I would love find out exactly how our families are related. My g-grandparents were Vincenzo and Nazzarena Ferlisi Coffaro, married December 31, 1887 in San Giovanni Gemini. One of the addresses I found was Via Alloro, several family members lived at this address. I believe they lived in “row houses.” Some listed the # while others just the street name. Carmela Cuffaro’s death record shows “Via Alloro #60. Vincenzo was the son of Mariano and Rosalia La Mendola Coffaro. One of Mariano Coffaro’s brothers was Luigi Coffaro. His address also shows “Via Alloro.” I have found several documents with the same address, and later another address. Mariano and Luigi’s parents (they have several other siblings, a total of 9, so far) were Francesco and Maria Carmela Lo Presti Coffaro. Would you mind if I email you directly rather than put any more family information on the internet? Or, you can email me at beznerj@comcast.netI look forward to hearing from you, JoEllen
