I believe my paternal great grandfather was a cigar maker in Switzerland. He migrated to England and changed the family name from Coenen to Clemens, we think, because of perceived prejudice against anyone with a Jewish sounding name.

I have Casper Coenen in London 1870's as father on Carl Coenen's birth certificate 1876.Carl has become Charles Clemens when he marries 1890's. Casper at some time married Gertrude Clemens, in 1881 census she is living with Charles and there is no sign of Casper I can find no more info on him. Gertrude is German I think. What else can you tell me about Casper?

I'm currently inquiring around the family for more information. It would be good if we could communicate directly but the website might not allow the passing of obvious addresses. Anyway, try jcingoa at hotmail dot com (or the equivalent!!). All I can tell you at the moment is that my Grandfather, Charles (Carl) Clemens, was the son of Casper (Clemens) Coenen and Gertrude Clemens. He married my Grandmother, Amy Billingsley, daughter of William Selby Billingsley and Emma Porter, and continued the family line - they had 13 children. If you are part of the Clemens clan, you have a lot of cousins you may not know about.
