I'm looking for information re: my grandfather and his ancestors. His name was Edwin Coenen (born 12-10-1901). He married Gladys Pratt. They lived in Sauk Rapids, MN. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi,
I don't know anything about your grandfather, but my boyfriend has the same name! I thought it was rahter funny, especially since you are american. We are living in the Netherlands, and as far as I know it is a dutch name; Coenen. Maybe German but I dont think so. Do you know anything about his ancestors? Maybe you are more lucky by seeking abroad?
Succes,

I believe it is a Dutch name - I'm just starting the search, so I'm new as to where to start - although I'm finding the name more often and some information here. I was always told I'm part German, Dutch and Irish (what a combination!)
Thanks for writing, Nicole!

Coenen is Dutch. Coenen family came to America in 1848 and made their settlement in Wisconsin, mainly in Brown county. I do know that they also spelled their name Koenen at the time they migrated here. I don't know exactly why they changed the spelling to Coenen when they arrived, but then so did so many other emmigrates at the time changed the spelling.

I was told that Coenen is a Belgium name. However, I was taught that it was a German name.
I have never heard it was a Dutch name.
