Theodora Coenen, b. 1816, North Brabant, m. Henry Gerrits, b. 1817. Moved to Hollandtown, Brown, Wisconsin with the group that came in 1847-1850 to the area. Very interesting history of the settlement and how the group came to Wisconsin.

Some businessmen needed to make a passage further up the Fox River. A Dutch priest though who better to deal with water than the Hollanders. A group of Catholic families from North Brabant were offered land in America if they would come and work. So many answered the call that the came in three boatloads over two years.

There are a few contemporary manuscripts and letters written back to North Brabant describing life and hardships in America. The 100 year anniversary of St. Francis Church names all the families and tells of the journey and first years in the new community. Are you related?

My email is ptstevin@AOL.com. I have a copy of the written history. Also there are several families with websites that tell much of the early history of Hollandtown and the families that eventually went to Oregon and Nebraska. Pat

Hi, Not sure your Theodora is mine. Theodora Coenen married Henry Gerrits in 1851. I think this might be a second marriage for her. There is a possibilty she was a widow of an unknown Coenen and her maiden name was van Broekhuijsin. I say this because she was 35 when she married Henry and had their first child at 39. This seems "old" for a first marriage.
Are you familiar with the database run by St. John's School in Little Chute, WI? If your family is from that group then I have some stories of why they came to the area and the early days. Please get back to me.

Hi, I think she is part of the Coenen's who lived in the area you talk about. I do not reconiZe her maiden so maybe not. I will get the Coenens data out to night and get back to you. Shirley

If you lookup Gerardus Coenen on Rootsweb one of the references will lead you to:
St John Nepomucene School Family Tree Project. This gives the Coenen Family from this area.
