My g.g.g.grandmother Louisa Coell born 1821 in Theydon Garnon, Essex her father John Coell born 1782. She married John Reed also from Theydon Garnon and died in London on the 18th November 1894.
As most of the Coells seem to be from Essex is this one big extended family.
Where does this name come from?

Hi,
Coell is either a form of Cole (diminutive of Nicholas or black in old English), or Cowell (dweller at the cow hill).
It is possible that we have common ancestors. The problem is the spelling of the surname. There is a family on IGI headed by Edward and Mary Cowell. They were born in 1755 and 1758 respectively in Epping. Their children, all born in Epping, include possibly your ancestor John Cowell born 1782 and possibly my ancestor Thomas Coel born 1786. To confuse matters some other children are shown with the surname Coell. Without seeing any of the original records I'm not sure how accurate this all is but as Theydon Garnon is next to Epping I'm sure your Louisa is related.

It would seem likely that we have a link with these two, My John Coell died in Theydon Garnon Workhouse, he was last recorded on 1861 census. The spelling is Coell and not Cowell, as is all I have seen so far.

Just to confirm that the spelling of my family line is also Coell.
I assume that your John Coell and family were the ones living in Lindsey Street, Epping in 1841.
