I am trying to find info. about the origin of the surname Coelho. I already know it is a name that came from the Spanish territory ( Coello ). Somehow, and due to some marriages in Portugal, mainly in the North ( Beira-Alta ) this name suffered a linguistic change to the portuguese form.
So, instead of "Coello" it was transformed to "Coelho".
If anyone knows more info. about "Coelho" or "rabbit" in english feel free to say something.

Thank you.

Hello! Here's what I know of my family's back ground...
My Grandmother was Costa, my Grandfather was Vieira. However, my great-great grandfather when traveling to America from Portugal, took his wife's name which was Vieira. His last name was Coelho. So technically, my last name should be Coelho. I have also hear myths from my family of him changing the spelling for no apparent reason, just due to coming to America. Does this sound like it might be remotely familiar to your family? Hope so!

My wife's ggramdmother was Rita Armelia Coelho born in Salon Azores. She married Joseph E. Serpa who was born in Fayal Azores. They moved to US (Rhode Island) and had a daughter Mary Caroline Serpa. Rita then moved back to Azores and Joseph raised Mary Caroline. Looking for information on Rita Coelho or any information on the Coelho name.

Thanks

My great grandmother, Annie Serpa had a brother Joseph who married a Rita Amelia in 1896 in Rochester, MA. They did live in Jamestown, RI. They had two children, Joseph Jr. and Mary. I know something happened to Rita, but not sure. Perhaps we are responding to the same Joseph and Rita?
