My husband's family originated in Portugal. At the time of the Inquisition they took on the surname "Coelho" to hide their Judaism and eventually emigrated to England. Other than that, we don't know anything about our family. My husband's grandfather in England was one of 19 children, but no one seems to know much about their ancestry.
Can you help? Please e-mail me your suggestions. Thanks, Jane Coelho
PS: There were some relatives named "Henriques" and other de la Fuente.

I have many de la Fuente ancestors. They were Sephardic Jews and started out in either Spain or Portugal. I have not as yet suceeded in finding the ones who left. They moved to the Netherlands; don't know when. Some of them were married in England, some in the the Netherlands. There was a group who moved to England; some of whom went on to the USA. I have heard from a David de la Fuente in England.

My group of de la Fuente's went from the Netherlands to Suriname; at least two were in the Dutch Colonial Army. My Father was born in Suriname and moved to the USA after WWII (he had an American Father). There was also another group who went from Suriname to Haiti to the USA. Some of them may have gone to Canada from there.

I have seen Henriques as a part of a compound last name. For example, some of my de la Fuente's were really Henriques de la Fuente, where "Henriques de la Fuente" was the whole last name. I have a book which lists Sephardi marriages in Amsterdam and Henriques appears alot as parts of last names. It may be that your ancestor was one of those "Henriques de la Fuente" people.

My cousin has a web site where you can see many de la Fuente names in our genealogy. Go to:

www.mostyn.com

and click on "Mother's Family".

If any of this sounds familiar to you, please let me know. Many of the de la Fuente's in my tree had large families, and there could be a connection.

I believe that my great-grandmother was Rachel Coelho married to Moses Ben Henrdiques. Their son, Nathan Hendriques Coelho de la Fuente whowas married to Rachel Mercado was my grandfather. They had a son, my father who was Maurice. I don't know when they came to the US but I do know they were in Holland and England. Does any of this sound familiar? I would love to know more.

Lynn-
These are all our family names, too. (Actually, my husband's family). I checked with my father in law, David Henriques Coelho telling him the information you provided. He said Maurice had only one son, Charles. He didn't know of any girl. Do you know of Charles. Maybe it's the wrong "clan" altogether, but the names are too coincidental not to be related in someway. I will keep you posted.
Isaac and Solomon Coelho who came to the US (from England) in the late 1800's had a sister who went from England to Holland and married a de la Fuente.
Sincerely, Jane Coelho

Dear Jane,

I do know who Maurice and Charles are. They are cousins but I'm not exactly sure how they are related. I believe Maurice was married to Rosa. Charles is married to to Jill and I think they live somewhere in Mass. I know Maurice has passed away but I'm not sure about Rosa. There is also er cousins in Israel - Alex and Rose de la Fuente. They have a son Maurice married to Susan. They all used to live in NY and since they all moved we have lost contact. Do you know any of them?

To Lynn Birnberg:
I have confirmation through synagogue records of the marriage of rachel coelho and Moses Ben Henriques. I was doing some research at the NY Public Library which has the Bevis marks synagogue of London rosters of marriages in the 1800s. Reply if you wish more info.

It certainly sounds like we are both talking about the same family. I would love to know as much as possible because I will be traveling to Spain and Portagal in the fall. It would be great to actually find a relative or a site where someone lived. Is it possible to talk to you directly?

Dear Jane,
I think I wrote to you before. I have recently found out my greatgrandmother's last name-Maiden name- was Henriques Coelho. She was born in Amsterdam, Holland. Her parents were David Samuel Henriques Coelho and Branke Levij Maduro. Her first name was Abigail, born June 10, 1769
