Lois,

I would love to learn more about this family.

William Lawson Coe and his family lived at Ewehurst, Lanchester District, Durham, England, just southeast of Newcastle Upon Tyne, before immigrating to New Yok City, Oct. 7, 1845. The five older children were born at Ewehurst.

I can purchase Lanchester Parish records on CD for just eight pounds (about $12). Would you like me to pursue this?

Do you have information on the family while they lived in England? Anything from the family bible would be helpful and much appreciated.
Yates, NY Coes - LILLIAN GERTRUDE BATES (HITCHINS)

Frank Lamont Coe (1852 - 1926) son of Tunis Henion Coe and Lucy C Kennedy (and my g-g-grandfather) married LILLIAN GERTRUDE BATES (nee Hitchins) on 22 Oct 1879 in Yates, Orleans Co., NY.
ANY INFO WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
What I know is that she was born 23 Jan 1860 in Ogden, Monroe Co., NY, died 19 Sept 1927 in Rochester and was buried at Yates Center Cemetery.
My assumptions are that "Hitchins" is a typo or name change and that she's the daughter of George J and Lydia F (Allen) Hitchings and that she married somebody named Bates at a very early age. He dies fairly quickly and she marries Frank Coe at age 19.
Looking for confirmation or correction of the above and any info on Lillian and/or her lineage.
COE Duane Edward, b. 1833 Loudoun Co VA USA

Ollie,

Duane Edward Coe was born in 1833 in Loudoun County, VA, a sixth generation descendant of Richard Coe (1650-1725), Tax Constable of Charles County, MD. Below is a biography from Vol. 1, Pages 430-31 from "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002), 2 vols., 1467 pages.

DUANE EDWARD6 COE (Robert5, Edward4, William3, Richard2, Richard1) was born in 1833 near Leesburg, VA. He grew up on his grandfather's land, and was undoubtedly involved in his father's milling business as a youngster. He remained in Loudoun County until after his father's death in 1856, after which he went with his mother to Wood County, VA (now West Virginia), where he is listed in the 1860 census. On January 19, 1861, he sold a lot on Rowell's Run in Wirt County to Francis M. Robinson and returned to Loudoun County. In 1862 he was living in the Coe farmhouse at Mt. Gilead, but was ordered by his brother Aurelius' wife to move to the miller's house at Coe's Mill so she could move in.

During the war he remained on the farm. To protect important documents from seizure and destruction by raiding Yankees he buried them in an obscure location. To prevent discovery, he avoided the place of concealment. Among the valuables was a note for $110 which he had loaned neighbor James R. Simpson. Subsequently, Simpson died and mice shredded and made a nest of the papers. After the war Duane was forced to file suit against Simpson's heirs in an attempt to collect the debt. To help persuade the court, he presented the tattered remains as evidence:

"The remains of the said single Bill he herewith files as his exhibit marked 'A' &
prays that the same be taken as part of this Bill - the said remains are in the
same condition as when yr. In October 1871 he had Jonah Tavenner resurvey the property. The survey showed the farm to contain only 94 acres. A Loudoun County court survey by James Oden in 1872 revealed only 91 acres in the parcel. Accordingly, in 1873 the court ordered Duane's payment be reduced by $379.59. In 1879, with Duane unable to make payments, the court ordered that 70 acres of the property be sold to satisfy debts. To avoid foreclosure, Duane assigned his rights to his wife's family, who paid off the balance owed and took title to the farm. He attended Mt. Zion Old School Baptist Church, at Gilberts Corner, VA.

He married October 13, 1861, in Loudoun County, VA, Sarah Rebecca Craig, daughter of James Craig.

I hope this is helpful.

Thank You,
Carl Robert Coe
Marysville, OH 43040-9012
http://blog.myspace.com/carlrcoe
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=562709570

Although my family is also from Baltimore, we are unrelated to Margaret Fulton Coe and her family. Unfortunately, with the death of Margaret's sister Mary Caroline Coe in 1968, this family died completely out (biography below).

I have attached a photo of Margaret Fulton Coe.

Mary Caroline Coe, b. Sept. 17, 1895, at Stewartstown, York Co., PA; d. Oct. 31, 1968, in Baltimore. With a BA from Maryland State Normal School at Towson and a BS from Johns Hopkins University, she received her Masters Degree in Education from Harvard University in 1934. She began a career as a teacher in the Baltimore County School System in 1915. Three years later she joined the faculty of the Friends School. In 1921 she moved to the Baltimore School System, serving in a variety of teaching and administrative positions until being promoted in 1934 to the post of principal of the Edgar Allen Poe Elementary School, Fayette and Green Streets. In 1942 she was named principal of Hamilton Junior High School. She remained there until retiring in 1956. A firm willed woman, she was an active member of Wilson Memorial Methodist Church for many years. Before moving to the address where her death occurred, she lived at Three E 32nd Street. She and her sister earlier shared a home on Canterbury Road.

If I can be of further help in any way, please let me know.

Thank You,
Carl Robert Coe
Marysville, OH 43040-9012
http://blog.myspace.com/carlrcoe
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=562709570
From "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" (Columbus, OH: 2002), 2 Vols., 1467 pages - page 965:

Margaret Fulton Coe, b. Dec. 25, 1893, at Stewartstown, York County, PA, daughter of Cyrus Walter and Mary Ellen (Price) Coe; d. Oct. 20, 1956, in Baltimore. She graduated from Maryland State Normal School in 1912 and completed a BS at Johns Hopkins University; later studied at Columbia University and Vassar College. Noted as a distinguished pathfinder in modern education and a friend of children and parents alike, she was associated for forty years with the Park School, a non-sectarian, independent coeducational day school, founded in 1912 in Baltimore. She is quoted as saying "every child needs to know ... that he is a valuable human being." Burial was at Druid Ridge Cemetery.

I hope this is helpful.

Thank You,
Carl Robert Coe
Marysville, OH 43040-9012
http://blog.myspace.com/carlrcoe
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=562709570
GLENDEN LLOYD6 COE (Henry Lloyd5, Henry Isaac4, Isaac3, Nathan2, William1) was born August 19, 1916, at Tabiona, UT. He worked as a general mill foreman for Kennecott Copper Corporation. He had a great sense of humor and loved fishing, hunting, his horse, history and baseball. He was a high priest in the LDS Church. A resident of West Valley City, UT, he died there October 6, 1992. Burial was at Valley View Memorial Park.

He married August 22, 1938, in Farmington, UT, Mary Josephine Fackrell, born at Granger, UT, daughter of Leo and Mary Eusebia (Smith) Fackrell.

Children:
i. Judith Ann, b. Aug. 9, 1941, at Richmond, CA.
ii. Mary Linda, b. Feb. 7, 1943, at Murray, UT.
iii. Michael Glen, b. Oct. 5, 1949, at Salt Lake City, UT.
iv. Patricia Jo, b.
Wilfreda,

Very nice to hear from you. We may have corresponded about twenty years ago. I’m the guy who wrote the book on the Coe family.

Your family has very unique DNA, the only family I have found with Haplogroup “I1.” This Haplogroup is most common in Scandinavia. With the Vikings having ruled much of England for several hundred years, it is surprising we don’t find more English families of this Haplogroup. The Coe family of Desborough, Northamptonshire, appears to be the parent family of Coes with your DNA type. Robert also traces his ancestry to Desborough, and shares common DNA with your family.

Daniel Coe who married Lydia Hudson is my gggggg grandfather. He did have a son John Coe, born 1744 in Worcester County, MD. John was captain of the Sinapuxent Battalion during the American Revolution and married Sarah Holton. His family moved to Greensboro, NC, after the Revolution and is well documented. His grandson General Levin Hudson Coe was nominated for Vice President of the United States in 1848.

William Coe (1730-1782) of Baltimore County, MD, appears to have been an immigrant, with likely roots in Desborough, Northamptonshire, England. Descendants of the above Daniel Coe are of Haplogroup R1b1, thought to be Anglo Saxon DNA, and most common among the Coe families of East Anglia, England.

I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. You can find a complete history of your family here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

For information on what we are doing in the Coe DNA Project, please see: http://blog.myspace.com/carlrcoe

For information on the award winning book, “The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia” (Columbus, OH: 2002), 2 vols., 1467 pages, please see: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=409192&l=7888af262...

Thank You,
Carl Robert Coe
Marysville, OH 43040-9012
http://blog.myspace.com/carlrcoe
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=562709570
This is indeed very helpful. I actually am a teacher at The Park School and am doing research on Margaret Coe to prepare for the schools Centennial celebration in 2012. I already knew some of what you told me but I did not know where she was buried, and I had never read those quotes before. Are you related to her? Do you know if she has any surviving nieces or nephews? I'd love to make contact with someone who actually knew her.
Thanks so much for your help. It is much appreciated.

Mary Coe m. Joseph Kilbourne, Jr.

Information posted by Marianne Busher on 19 May 2000 4:54PM
is partially incorrect. It was posted at the following URL:

http://boards.ancestry.com.au/surnames.coe/316/mb.ashx

Mary Coe m. Joseph Kilbourne, Jr. are my 4 x great grandparents. Therefore, the name, "Sarah Ann Coe" used by Marianne Busher, is incorrect. Her name should have been "Mary Coe".

Kilbourne, Payne Kenyon, The History and Antiquities of the Name and Family of Kilbourn (in its varied orthography, : Durrie & Peck, New Haven, Connecticut (1856), p. 107:

" 80. JOSEPH, b. in Litchfield, March 5, 1745 ; was married to Elizabeth Marsh, daughter of Timothy Marsh, Nov. 30, 1765, by Ebenezer Marsh, J. P. He was admitted a freeman in Litchfield, Sept. 9, 1769; was Highway Surveyor in 1772 ; appraiser on the estate of Barnias Beach, in 1777 ; appraiser on estate of Zopher Beach, in 1779. Elizabeth, his wife, died Oct. 15, 1777; and he subsequently married Mary Coe, widow of Timothy Marsh, Jr., (a brother of his first wife). Mr. K. was a soldier of the revolution, and in June, 1778, he was a prisoner. He removed with his family to Wyoming, Penn., in 1786, where he was subjected to many hardships and adversities—having been persecuted and imprisoned by the government of Pennsylvania. In 1796, he settled in Delaware, Middlesex County, Upper Canada, where he was for many years Town Clerk. He died in the latter place in September, 1807; Sarah, his widow, died in Detroit soon after.* "

Sarah Nott m. Timothy Marsh, Sr. One of their children, Timothy Marsh, Jr. m. Mary Coe. Her parents seem to have been Thomas Coe m. Abigail Leaming. After Timothy's death, Mary married Joseph Kilbourne, Jr. Joseph had been married to Elizabeth Marsh, a sister of Timothy. Confusing is it not?

A daughter of Mary Coe m. Joseph Kilbourne, Jr., is Lucy Kilbourne m. Isaac Fairchild, my 3 x great grandparents.

Please note that the Beach and Fairchild families are also related over several generations. For example, Ruth Beach m. Benjamin Fairchild, the parents of Isaac Fairchild. Thomas Beach m. Joan Hill, are the 3 x great grandparents of Isaac Fairchild.

I would be pleased to hear from anyone researching these families.
Hi There
I've been searching through boards, trees etc., looking for any information on Ann/e Coe c.1770-80 who married Edward Gatward, St. Marys, Saffron Walden in 1796. We know of their children Harriet 1802,Robert 1806 and Henry 1809 all born in Castle Hedingham area. It is from Henry that my husband is descended. But we're having no luck finding out about Ann prior to her marriage.
If anyone can offer any help with Anns 'Coes' side it would be much appreciated. I know it's been quite a while since the last message here re; Coes and Saffron Walden but I'm getting desperate.

Kindest regards.

Re: Coe family information, pictures, etc...

Hi! I am a descendant of the Coes of Cumberland County. I have so many questions to ask, but my side is the Black side of the Coes. I know there are 2 books in existence right now, one is called "Chronicles of Coe Colony" originally written by Samuel S. Coe, and "The Saga of Coe Colony". I am trying to find out a little more about the heritage of my family. My great grandmother was Martha Cassie Coe, who was later called "Mother Wagner". But I am curious because the first ones named are Sukey and Betty, who are slaves brought over from North Carolina, and maybe were sold to old John Coe or something. I am trying to find out where they came from before that. I am also trying to find out if anyone may have a photo of "Bill Raspberry" who was my great grandfather that married "Martha Cassie Coe". It is said that he went to Normal School over in Tennessee. His whole life seems to be a mystery. Can anyone help?
Carol Lockridge
Thecarollockridgeband2005@yahoo.com
