Hi Merlyn,
I have talked to the daughter of the Codding Family that had the letters, and she has agreed to let me send you the copies of the letters that she sent me.
I will do that as soon as I get them copied. Tried to scan them but did something wrong and they didn't come out.
Merlyn, in your files do you have any names of Coddington's that came across on the Mayflower? Sorry I don't have any specific names but my cousin remembers my Aunt mentioning that we had relatives with that name that came across on the Mayflower. I think if you might have all the Children of John Coddington from his three marriages we might have a connection there, not sure though. I don't have his second wife's maiden name only her first name Mary, did she have a son?. Any help that you could give me would be appreciated, Thank You, Linda LKA51344@aol.com

Linda,
I am not aware of any Coddington on the Mayflower. I don't believe that was the case. William Coddington, the first Gov of Rhode Island, was a member of the Massachusetts Bay Company in Boston when he first came to America but he was not a 'Plymouth Rock Pilgrim'.
You can view my file at www.rootsweb.com, WorldConnect Project. You can start with James Coddington (1530-) and work your way down to present. I am not aware of a John Coddington with three marriages. I think a review of my file will clear up a lot of your questions. Thank you. Merlyn

The Coddington family's first known ancestor seems to have been a certain William de Saint Michael, who was granted the manor of Codington (Codyngton), County Surrey, by King John in 1203, upon the forfeiture of Guy de Laval, who had previously held it. The elder line of the family continued to hold the manor until 1538, when King Henry VIII saw the lands and desired them. There was, naturally, an arrangement, whereby the King became possessed of the lands and manor, and Richard Codington of Codington was recompensed by receiving from the King the lands of the priory of Ixworth in Suffolk, which had just been sequestrated. Since Richard and his wife Elizabeth had no issue, they were glad to make the change, particularly since opposition to the royal will of that monarch was so dangerous. Henry VIII then built the palace of Nonesuch (or "nunsuch") on the lands of the manor of Codington, and presented this palace to Anne Boleyn. The following spellings of the family name have been found: Coddington, Codington, Codyngton, Cuddington, Cudington, Quedington, Quiddington, Quidyngton, and even (amazingly) Quedhampton. (John Insley Coddington in a letter dated May 13, 1956, to a Mr Arthur J. Willis, Kent, England.)
