My great-grandmother was Parthena Jane Cocanower though on her marriage license her last name was spelled Cocaknower. She was born 18 Dec 1859 in Indiana. She married William Asby Knight on 10 Mar 1881 in Illinois. Sometime after Aug 1884 they began a migration west that would end on the eastern shores of Lake Washington in 1898. A span of roughly 14 years. Two children were born in Illinois before they left and two children were born along the way. Her brother Daniel Martin Cocanower also migrated west and ended up on Whidbey Island in Washington. Parthena's parents were John Harrison Cocanower and her mother was Martha Ellen Hooten. After Martha died in 1869 John re-married in 1870 to Mary E. Beck and they had at least six more children including twins Amelia May and Adelia Day.

Hi, my name is Bill Knight and I live in Washington state. I saw your post on Ancestry.com about Cocanowers and followed the trail to your web site and saw that one of the lines you were interested in was Knights in MO and KS. I don't know if mine is the line you're looking for but I'll tell you what I know and you can judge for yourself.

My great-grandfather is William Asby Knight. In 1881 he married Parthena Jane Cocanower (aka Jennie or Eliza Jane). They had four children: Edith Loren Knight b. 26 Jan 1883 in Illinois, Perry Francis Knight b. 12 Aug 1884 in Illinois, Roy Albert Knight b. 11 Mar 1889 in Nebraska, and Leslie George Knight b. 15 Aug 1890 in Colorado. Eventually the family ended up in Washinton state in 1898. Obviously they had to come through Missouri and Kansas but more than that I don't know.

William had three sisters and a brother, John, but he died young. His sisters were: Margaret b. 3 Oct 1849 in Indiana, Mary b. 6 May 1861 in Indiana, and Sarah b. 16 Mar 1863 in Indiana.

Margaret married a John Brown in 1869 and had a son Charles b. 11 Aug 1870. Mary married a William C. Young in 1880. I don't know if they had any children. Sarah married a Frank Myres in 1879. Again I don't know if they had any children.

William's father and mother were Barnabus Knight and Louisa Jan(Janet) Hacker and Barnabus's father and mother were Adam Knight and Mary (unknown).

If any of this is helpful please let me know.

Please help...
I am Mr. Daniel Anciano a history instructor at CAvite State University, Philippines. I wish to find a photo of Mr. Joseph A. Cocannouer who served as principal of our school 1911-1915. Mr. Cocannouer, introduced the teaching of scientific farming in our school during his tenure. I will send the history of Mr. Cocannouer to our Board of Regent apropos of naming our College of Agriculture Building to be Called Joseph A. Cocannouer Hall.
Your response to this message will give Mr. Joseph Cocannouer his right place and honor in our school history.

Respectfully yours,

DANIEL M. ANCIANO

Daniel,

I hope you've already gotten your information, but just in case, I found the following in the Publisher's Preface to the 1980 reprint of "Weeds: Guardians of the Soil":

The author of this book has been teaching conservation and biology for close to fifty years. But he has been a student as well and a keen field man who has specialized in the ways of weeds, not only in his home state of Oklahoma where he has spent much time learning from the Indians, but in other parts of the world -- in Europe, India and the Philippines, particularly.

Are you still looking for a photograph? I don't have one, but I could try looking for one if you still need it.

Laura

Hi laura,

Ms. Laura,

Thank you very much for your reply.
Mr. Cocannouer was assigned in Indang Farm School (now known as Cavite State University) during 1911-1915. For more than four years (2006-2010), i tried hard to trace documents regarding his service in the Philippines. His most important contribution in our school was the establishment of first real agricultural course (see cocannouer: Trampling Out Vintage) and later as an agronomy professor in one of Asia's prestigious agricultural schools - College of Agriculture of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos.

Mr. William Gochanoer sent me a picture of mr. cocannouer in 2009, and I will appreciate your effort if you can help me to find another one.

Truly yours,

Daniel
