Coallier Americanized to Quillia
Somebody from Quebec...please help!!! I've been searching for the parents of Eugene Quillia. From what I understand, he was born somewhere in Quebec by Montreal under the name Coallier or Coaillier or Coulier or Caillier, (I've even been told possibly L'ecuyer) but when he moved to Malone, NY, his name was changed to Quillia. His given name may have been changed from Eugene, to something else, too. Another researcher said that perhaps his name was Ludger?!!? I can't think of a French name that could have been Americanized to Eugene. He was born sometime between 1834 and 1837. He married Marie Nadeau in 1858. He had 9 children in the USA: Henry, Ida, Samuel, Charles Abraham, Eugene Joseph Junior, Albert, George and Benjamin.
I've looked through the online Drouin Collection but I can't read French. I do the best I can. For that time period for births, I came up with some names: Francois Xas Domice Coallier, (Boucherville 1834-43) Adolphe Eucher Coallier (Boucherville 1834-43), Charles Ludger Collier (Montmagny 1839), Eucher Coallier (Chambly, Boucherville Village 1828-1833).
Since the Eugene Quillia that I'm looking for had a son named Joseph Eugene, Jr., I looked for Joseph Coallier with a birthdate of 1834-1837 but couldn't find any. Can anyone help me figure out what was the correct, French name that Eugene Quillia was born with and who his parents might have been? I saw Francois Coaillier sign some birth records in the Drouin collection many times and it's around the time period I'm looking for. I'm wondering if that could be Eugene's Dad. Although, I don't know what part of Quebec I'm really looking for. Thanks.

Re: Coallier Americanized to Quillia
My grandfather Arthur J. Qulia said that Eugene Quillia was a shoemaker and may have gone by the name Couillard, in addition to Coulier or Coallier.

Re: Coallier Americanized to Quillia
Hi... I'm French canadian... Trying to get into my own genealogie, My maiden name is Coallier... Here is what I can tell you... Eugene is a french name, add an accent on the second e! Also I Found Coallier in 2 different areas in Quebec.
Boucherville (city), Tres-Sainte-Famille Parrish, Chambly County and Sherrington, St-Philippe de Laprairie, Quebec
I think you will be luckier in Boucherville I found Francois Coallier dit Novion (us french people like to have Long names...!) He was married Twice, his first wife was Madeleine Quintin married on 2nd Oct 1809 in Boucherville. Their son Francois Xavier Maried Louise Lacoste on Oct 14th 1834.... So I think that might fit with the dates of a birth for your ancestor! good luck!!

Re: Coallier Americanized to Quillia
You must be related (somehow) if your maiden name was Coallier!!!! Since I last wrote that, I pretty much narrowed him down to Adolhpe Eucher Coallier and his own family called him "Eucher" but it sounded like "Uger" and the Church called him Eugene. His father was Joseph Coallier dit Novion and mother was Emilie Bissonette. For a long time I thought that he was Ludger Novion, aka Eucher Coallier, son of Francois and Appoline Gauthier dit St. Germaine, but that person married Elise Picard and died in Canada. My Eucher named his own son Eugene Joseph, Jr. He must have been naming his son's middle name after the son's grandfather, Joseph Coallier, Sr. I found Adolphe Eucher's brother Joseph and his sister Helloise on a census report. Do you know your Coallier lineage? I've come across Qualier and Novion (Montreal) who were originally both Coallier dit Novion. I'm not familiar with where these places are geographically located that you mentioned, but when I was going through Drouin, I noticed the names of places that you mentined, even though I can't find all of them on a map. I plan on mapping out a visit at some point to see where my ancestors lived.
Do you have any photos of the Coallier family members around 1800-1900? I've always wondered how much I resemble the Coallier ancestors. I have a photo of Eucher that I'd be happy to share if you can contact me through the Ancestry connection service. It's also on my tree (Quillia) though I have mistakes in the tree. Happy to meet you!
