TO THE SURROGATE OF THE COUNTY OF STEUBEN:

THE PETITION of Franklin S.(tephen) Coal of the town of Little Mackinaw in the County of Tazewell, Illinois respectfully showeth:

That Peleg G.(orton) Coal of the Town of Howard in the said County of Steuben, died in the said Town of Howard on or about the 29th day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and Seventy Three. That at the time of his death he was an inhabitant of the County of Steuben. That he left no Will, as far as your petitioner has heard, or been able to discover:

That he left Mary (Tracy-AC) Coal his widow of Gridley, McLean County, Illinois. William P.(eleg) T.(racy) Coal of Gridley, aforesaid. Alva M.(adison) Coal of Howard, Steuben County, NY and your petitioner, sons of said deceased. Adelia C. Kunce of Little Mackinaw, Tazewell County, Illinois. Mary A. Norris of _____, McLean County, Illinois. Amanda M. Coal of Gridley in said McLean County, daughters of said deceased, all of full age. Lorenzo D. Santee of Prince Mills, Pioneer County, Illinois, Sarah Sacks of Gridley, McLean County, Illinois, Letta D. Brock of Dixon, Maner County, Missouri, Peleg G. Santee of Arvilla, Jasper County, Missouri, Nancy Backus of Dixon aforesaid, Emma Santee of Arvilla aforesaid, James Santee of Arvilla aforesaid,, Leslie Santee of Arvilla aforesaid, children of Celina, a grand daughter of said deceased, all of full age except-Peleg G., Nancy, James and Emma and Leslie who are minors. Mary Jospehine Coal of Tremont, Tazewell County, Illinois, Peleg Gorton Coal of Gridley, McLean County, Illinois, Urania Turney of Michigan, children of Lorenzo Coal a deceased son of said deceased, all over the age of 21 years.

And your petitioner further showeth that the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased do not exceed in value the sum of Fifteen Hundred Dollars: and your petitioner prays that Letters of Administration of the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased may be granted by the Surrogate to your petitioner.

STEUBEN COUNTY, Surrogates Court

On this 11th day of March, 1874, personally appeared before me, in open Court, Franklin S. Coal the above named petitioner, and made oath that the matters set forth in the above petition are true, to the best of the knowledge, information and belief of said petitioner. Signed: G. T. Spencer, Surrogate.

Steuben County-ss: I, Franklin S. Coal do swear that I will well, honestly and faithfully discharge the duty of Administrator of the estate of Peleg G. Coal, deceased, according to law. Subscribed and sworn the 11th day of March, 1874 before me, F. S. Coal.

There is also a note to the effect that ALva M. Coal had perviously petitioned for Administrator but had failed to file the necessary forms and take the oath of office for that purpose.
