Re: Coady's from Bear('s)Cove, Renews, Newfoundland,Canada
I'm Kim's Sister from a previous post; The man referred to that went missing was my Grandfathers Brother, the story we were told as Children was that he left in a boat belonging to the Woolridge's and apparently fell overboard because he never returned nor was his body recovered. My Grandfather was John Coady originally from Bear Cove but married a Jenny Mullowney from Bay Bulls and moved to St. John's where he worked for the City of St. John's and raised his Family. As a small child I can remember people visiting from Renews which always evolved Song, Stories and a good game of Cards. I also know of a toast my Grandfather would give when they would have a drink which went something like this;" I'm living on the Beverley surrounded by a Grove, here's good luck to Bear Cove, Southside and Frenchman's Cove" We always made many trips to Renews and Cappahayden as they had an old Shack in Chance Cove that we frequently spent time every Summer. It only burnt down a couple of years ago. Nice to know of others that are still around that knew of our Family.

Jackie, it is hardly more than a month ago that my brother was talking about that "toast." And I couldn't remember it off hand. My brother was saying that he was sure my late husband - Billy Fowler - told me about that. And I do remember most things - but that must have slipped my mind. No doubt he mentioned it because Billy was a firm believer in remembering one's heritage.
Now my brother thought that there was even more to that "toast" and thought it was a song. But like you, he only remembered these same words. And maybe you are right, it might have been just a toast.
My brother thought that it actually referred to your grandfather. He believe that when your grandfather came to St. John's first that he lived aboard a boat - The Beverley. And, of course, the places mentioned would be - Bear Cove where he was born - the Southside of Renews where the family moved (Incidentally, near the homestead of the ladies who raised me), and Frenchman's Cove - a cove near Cappahayden. Now I don't know if the information about the Beverley is correct or not.
Yes, about my story about the "William Coady" from Boston.. Now maybe it was in the nineties but your Aunt Mag was invited to a party for my mother-in-law's - Gertie Fowler's - birthday - and anyway she was telling us the story of the phone call at that time because it had just happened that week. Now no doubt she was telling the truth about the phone call BUT what the callers on the other end were up to - of course, she had no idea.
Regards, Mary Teresa

You are absolutely right as they did live on an old Shipwreck on what was from memory Molloy's Lane in St. John's, they lived there with another couple of Families and I actually have a picture of my Grandfather sat on the boat. So maybe he made up that toast, who knows? He spoke of Renews fondly right up until he passed away in his 90's, he was the jolliest, sweetest Man ever. His sister Aunt Marg had the Same personality. They always spoke highly of the Fowlers and Roche's from Renews as they were great Friends. His memories were fond of his life in Bear Cove. Regards Jackie

I remember fondly of pop telling us how they left Bear Cove on a cock of hay!!!! He also had a brother Andrew(Andy) who lived on Shea Heights with his family. He was a very quiet man but again spoke highly of his birthplace. So nice to hear stories of my grandfathers family. Pop Coady was a remarkable person and loved by too many to ever be forgotten.

Yes I am his grand daughter and very proud to say so. My mom Josephine married Arnold Chafe from Petty Hr and raised their family here. Myself and my two sisters all live in Petty Hr!!! Your so right about the Coady Family and their love for family, music, story telling, playing cards and entertaining. They loved having a good laugh for sure with anyone who would be in their home or in the downtown area. Pop always kept his accent from the Southern Shore and so very proud of his roots. He always said I am John Coady from Bear Cove!!!!
