Hi,

I'm looking for any information available concerning Tobias Coady of PEI. I believe the more specific area in PEI is called Hazelbrook (a.k.a. Lot 48 & 49).

Tobias' second son, Tobias Jr., was born in 1851 and died in 1929. His first wife was Catherine Acorn, b. 1851 and d. 1895. His second wife was Margaret Driscoll (b. 1854).

Tobias Jr. had a son William T. (Tobias?) who was born in 1879 and died in 1964. William T. is my great-grandfather.

If you have any information you're willing to share, I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to trace my Coady roots back to whenever the first generation landed in Canada.

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Sorry, I don't have a Susan Coady born at that time or with any spouse named Dougan.

Sorry!

Thanks for looking. I've certainly hit a brick wall concerning which Coady family she is from.

Hi,

I do not have a Susan born c.1854 in my Coady family (that I know of), but I did find a Susan Dougan in the 1881 census, age 25, living in Charlottetown, PEI. And, there is a Susanna Cody in the PEI Baptismal Index, baptised on 2 January 1853. Parents are Michael Cody and Maragret Sullivan.

Good luck,

Jim

Jim;

Does the Susan Coady in the 1881 census have a middle initial. And our there other household members listed? How does one get access to that census on line?

Thanks

Douglas

Douglas,

The 1841, 1881, 1891 and 1901 PEI censuses can be searched online at: http://www.edu.pe.ca/paro/census/build.asp and the 1911 census at: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11

The Susan DOUGAN I found in the 1881 census appears to be living with Anthony, aged 27, and Katie, aged 0 (I assume husband and newborn child).

In the 1891 census they are a big family listed as DUGGAN:

ANTHONY DUGGAN aged 38
SUSAN 36
KATIE (KATY) 10
MAY 8
GERTY 8 (Gertrude in the 1901 census)
ELLA 6
EMMA 5
IRENE 3
MAGGIE 2 (M. Ethel in the 1901 census)
MARY JOSEPHINE (JOSEPH) 0
WILLIAM (WM.) 67

I would guess that William is Anthony's father.

The family appears again in the 1901 census. I have not checked the 1911 census.

I hope this is your Susan.

Jim

Thanks for the info. Yes you have it right, this is my grandmother May's family, and her mother's, Susan, maiden name was Coady. I actually have notes of this census, 1891, I made from the archive in Charlottetown about 15 years ago. My notes show that there was a Catherine Cody, age 48 as a lodger. I'm hoping she might be Susan's sister, but have not been able to make that connection, or find their parents. My notes from this census also says that Susan's parents were born in Ireland. Perhaps this Coady line were new arrivals to PEI. Thanks again for all your help. Douglas.

Douglas,

It is my experience that in Prince Edward Island the CODY and COADY surnames are completely interchangeable. My great-great-grandfather, Laurence CODY, arrived in PEI around 1830. Our family name is now COADY, but of the nine siblings in my father's family, four used CODY and five COADY. I have first cousins in California with the last name CODY. I will have a look at my records for Catherine.

Hi Mark, Happy New Year!
I just started doing research on my husband's family (McCloskeys of PEI). Research has led me to a Tobias Coady and Susan Pernell of PEI.
One of Tobias daughter was Mary Coady (1831-1911) who married a William Griffin (PEI). One of their daughters, Mary Ellen Griffin, married a Patrick McCloskey. They are my husbands great grandparents.
In addition to trying to find info on Tobias Coady and Susan Pernell, I am struggling with Patrick McCloskey (185?-?) and William Griffin.

Did you ever find the information? Thank you so much for any info.
