Can any help make links with the following Coad's from Cornwall and Antwerp, Belgium.
EDWARD COAD of Lanhydrock= BETTY GRIGG of St. Minver b.1762
Son: JOSPEH COAD b.1781= DORCAS WELLINGTON of Luxulyan b.1790
Children of JOSEPH and DORCAS COAD
Dau. ELIZABETH COAD of Luxulyan b.1810 m. 1837= WILLIAM CHALK of Port Isaac b.14.1.1811
Dau. ALSEY COAD b.1812
Dau. TABITHA DORCAS COAD b. 1815
Son. JOSEPH GRIG COAD b. 1829

I have my family (PHILLIPS) photo album from the 1800's in it I have photos of DORCAS COAD (nee WELLINGTON) and ELIZABETH CHALK (nee COAD). Both direct ancestors, but then I have:
JOHN BOULT COAD
ALSEY COAD
DRUSSILA COAD
Mr. BOULT AND ALICE COAD with baby
LOUSA JANE COAD
JOSEPH B COAD

My ancestors from lived around around Port Isaac for hundreds of years, moved in 1883 to St Austell, Cornwall. My 2xGt grandfather WILLIAM COCK PHILLIPS owned and managed many ships, mainly schooners, the COAD family also owned ships, (I have the names of many of the ships they owned).
The relations in the Photo Album moved to Antwerp, Belgium where they were shipping agents for a period.

I have original post cards of Port Isaac (around 1905/6) sent to members of the COAD family whilst in Antwerp.

Another name that appears on some of the ships records as a share holder is JOHN DAY COAD.

I know JOHN GRIGG COAD was a Captain and ships owner, as a matter of interest one of the Ships was named MARY COAD (Official Number 69456)
Another Ship the MARY ANN (Official Number 19229) was owned by JOE COAD and WILLIAM CHALK (my 3xgt grandfather ~ father-in-law to William Cock Phillips)

If anyone can help piece together the relationships of the above COADs I would much appreciate it.

Kindest Regards
JOHN PHILLIPS

I have a Mary Coad in my family tree. She married a John Martin (one of my ancestors) - I think she was born either in St Gorran or St Ewe in Cornwall and the family Bible owned by Mary and John indicate a connection to the Wills Family - many of which are buried in St Gorran churchyard. Mary obviously had money because her and John (a hotel porter!) were able to buy a large inn, in Fowey Cornwall. I haven't a birth date for Mary at the moment but she was 10 years or so older than John who was born in 1860.

Probably Mary Coad ch 17/3/1850 St Ewe, daughter of John Coad and Caroline Bawden. You can see them in the "brannelcoads" database on rootsweb worldconnect. I didnt have a marriage for her so thanks.

Ive looked further and the dates are very wrong on this. They were in fact married in 1856 and John was born in Lanreath 1822, son of Thomas and Mary (Hicks?).

John is a porter in the Talbot Inn Lostwithiel in 1851. By 1861 he has the Fowey inn (cant read the name) is married to Mary (1815 St Gorran). Elizabeth Coad (22, St Ewe) is working there - likely a daughter or close relative of Mary by previous marriage, as no Coads have ever been born St Gorran.

In fact she's actually Martha (mary) Burt, who married William Coad in 1825. William was a mine agent in St Austell and therefore fairly well off - I have other examples where the families of mine agents bought inns. Elizabeth was their niece, sister of the Mary Coad I mentioned in the last email!

Never got around to replying to this!
The John Martin that I am speaking about was born to William and Eliza Martin in Lanreath rather than Thomas Martin and Mary HIcks (the otherside of the family). Their son (also called John) was born in 1822 in Pelynt as you say. Whereas the John Martin I refer to was originally a basechild and was born sometime before June 1826. He was the one that worked in the Talbot Inn - married Mary Coad and then lived in the Inn in Fowey ( Commercial Inn now Safe Habour Hotel) and went on to live with his sister - living off his own means. The census may be wrong but it looks like Mary was born around 1815.

An oldie but a goodie. Thanks for the info on John Martin

Now it looks as if William did marry twice.

1841 Census. Priory Row, St Austell. William Coad (40, Tin miner) and Martha (40). In county. Mary Davies (55, FS), Martha Hooper (14).

Martha Coad d Q1 1849 St Austell

William Coad m Q3 1850 St Austell. Problem - bride not recorded on FreeBMD. I'll ask the OPC to tell us about the marriage.

1851 Census. London Apprentice, St Austell. William Coad (53, St Ewe, agent of tin mine) and Mary (41, Gorran) with niece Elizabeth (12, Creed)

Sounds interesting. The family bible I have has a lot of names written into it - lots of the 'Wills' family. One entry says Mary Wills XXXX(?) Gorran, St Austell October 30th 1811 - presume it's Mary's birth. Then further down it says William Coad Mary XXXX (there is a surname that repeats itself in the bible entries, but I can't read it) married July 6 1850. Then a Coad child is born May 22 1852 also called Mary. William Coad then dies December 6th aged 54 (1852). Then Mary Coad marries John Martin July 1856. The writing is really hard to read...think I need a handwriting expert..how fustrating!!
