I am looking into the Coad Family tree. I live in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. There are a few Coad's in Tasmania, but seems to be 2 branches, my grandfather was Herbert John Coad, and we have been led to believe that he came with his family from Ireland. He was always called "Jack" and he married Hilma Lucy Cowland, when he came back from 1st world war in Hobart in 1918. If anyone knows about the Coad's of Ireland I would appreciate some help. We have also found out about the Coad's in South Australia which are mainly from Wales, but apparently no relation.

Coad is a name purely from Cornwall and Devon. There are no real Coads in Ireland or Wales, except as strays or occasonal corruptions. In southern Wales there have been Codds for a very long time. In Ireland there are Codds, Codys and Codes. (many of these are descended from the Codds of Lincoln, who in turn are descended from French Lecaudes)

For some reason, once Irish Codds arrived in the New World they began using Coad in a few instances. Possibly because the Cornish name carried less stigma.

Actually, the Irish Codd/Codes who immigrated to Canada in my family became Coads because of political differences in the family. The Codes were liberal and the Coads were conservatives. Can't vouch for other families, but that's what happened in mine. There are also differences because sometimes county clerks and census enumerators spelled them that way. People back then weren't often fussy about spellings, I've found.

Codd to Coad - the reason

Having looked at this a bit more - quite a number of different CODD families changed their name to Code or Coad or Cood when they arrived in the New World or England. This probably has less to do with politics than pronunciation.

As far as I can tell Codd was pronounced with the long European "o", somewhere between Cord and Coad and Cood. That's not what the English were calling them and as pronunciation was so much more important than spelling back then - they tended to go for the nearest local variation. Which in Lancashire/London was CODE and in the New World where there were so many Cornish immigrants - COAD.

Whats so surprising is that they then stuck to the new spelling religiously.

The spelling of my husband's last name Code is the spelling used in Canada. In Wicklow and Wexford were known as Codd, and still are today. I just met some long lost cousins in October. In Canada it became Code either because of accent and spelling of the writer and my understanding is that Coad came because of religious differences rather than politics, however, it could be politics. The first generations of Irish Codd's were British/Irish not Irish as such, I have even read that those who lived in the Wicklow/Wexford border area even spoke the old english/saxon language several hundred years later. Almost all Wicklow Codd's are protestant with some catholic. The reason I was given for the change was due to land retention and personal preference. The Wexford Codd's are mostly Catholic. The story of Codd/Coad came from David Code of Perth. One of Gordon's descendant's children left the family in Lanark Co. and became it is believe Morman's and went to the US never to be heard from again.
I have a number of records for the Codd's from Ireland, some from the Church of Ireland Library; some from the National Archives and also the Library. I also have some records from the Coolattin Estate for a variety of families but NO Codd's. I received a 12 page list of bmd from a George Code aged 90 from Aughrim. These families still live in the area of Co.Wicklow. If interested I can be contacted at codeannette@shaw.ca
