My father has told me that the Coads were originally from France, but one of them came to England and married an Englishwoman. One of their decendants, John Coad came over on the Mayflower. He also told me the original spelling was Coade, but they dropped the e to americanize the name.

There are Coads in Maryland. since 1600,s. I am tracing that line here, not sure when they arrived, but after 1834 weh Maryland was founded. I know of no connection to tthe Coads of the Mayflower.

I live in Maryland, but my father was born in Kansas. We ended up living in Maryland because my father was an United States congressman and had to live near the Washington, D.C. area (Merwin Coad, D-Iowa, 1957-63).

MD Coad Family

The Coads in MD were from St. Mary's Co., very much Democratic. Three in the state Legislature, the lates Senator J. Allan Soad 24 yrs c. 1918-1942, exavt dates on MD state site.

I have traced the Coad line from c. 1800 to present, most branches, a continuong project. If you can get back one or two past your father, I can tell you if there is a connection. The Coads here were relatively conservative, Democrats.

Beth:

I have been working on the Coad family for quite some time. My connection - My g.g.Aunt Mary A. Allan (1842-1916) married J. Edwin Coad (1825-1911) in Balt. MD in 1877. First marriage for Mary, 2d for J. Edwin, as his first wife of 30 yrs. and 12 children died in 1874. Father of E. Edwin was Col. William Doad. Coad line I have is from St. Mary's County from at least 1700's. Any familiarity?

Ed - there are a number of different branches
- mine came from England in 1828 or so and started in PA.
They moved on to Iowa, Kansas, and Oregon - I
have a couple of other Coad trees in my possession, I will check
them out -- my guess is that maybe the Coad's all tie in together somewhere back in
England -- my branch comes from Devon, another from Cornwall and
there is an Irish branch too. Ours is traced back to Robert 1701 - 1781 in England.

I have visited Cornwall and I got the impression from talking to a local Historian that the Coad name may have originated in the Cornwall region. If you go back far enough, the Coad's of the world may all be related.
