Dear Lola,
I do a lot of research on the Coachman name but I'm sorry I am not familiar with these names. What part of the country are your Coachmans from?

Dear Marcus,
I have a some information on Ward Coachman I would be glad to send on to you if you would send me your address. One article I have gives his biography and even includes a picture of him.
Military records found in the Georgia Archives show that Ward Coachman served in Co. E 2 Creek Mounted Volunteers
In 1875 he was Principal Chief of the Creek Nation. I will be happy to send what I have on to you.
Best regards, Bette

I am distantly related to the Coachman family and have quite a bit of info on this line which I am willing to share. Ward was born about 1829 in the Creek Nation in what is now Alabama. He had two wives and settled in Wetumka, OK. Please contact me at wlaporte@cox.net

I am curious about the origins of Ward's last name. I've read that his name was Ward Coachman (Co-cha-my). And his mother was Polly Durant who married Muslushobie or Pitcher according to the Chronicles of Oklahoma Vol. XVI Dec 1938 No. 4
I thought that the Creeks surnames came through the female line. Yet where did Ward get his surname from his father? I wonder what Co-cha-my means. It also says his grandfather was Lacklan McGillivray who was born in Dunmaglass, Scotland.

Bette, You have it about right. Wards Mother, Polly, was a sister to my 3rd GGM Sophia Durant who m. Dr. John L. McCombs and lived in Tallapoosa County, AL. When my Aunt brought up his name it was always as Cousin Ward. I was born and raised in Wetumka, OK, and know many of the Coachman's now living there. None can go back very far on thier family tree but the ones that I have passed on info to. His Dad was Seco Pitcher also known by other names. Bette, how do you relate to the Coachman family? Have you been in contact with Harold Coachman? He is a half blood who is very interested in his family tree and has done extensive research on it. Bill LaPorte
