I am the brother of Siobhan on this message board. I have just returned from a trip to the notable sites of World War I, and as a result, on my return, I have been researching any Clibbens' who have died in wars.
From the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, I have found that in World War I, Lance Corporal William Clibbens of the 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, died on the first day of the Somme, 1st July 1916, and has no known grave. I saw his name on Thiepval Memorial when I was in France.
Another is Private William George Clibbens, 10th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, of Leeds, son of Joseph and Elizabeth, husband of Ellen, who died aged 29 on the 26th January 1917, and is buried at Wimereux cemetery, near Boulogne. This cemetery is for the dead from the military hospitals at Wimereux. Lt-Col John McCrae, who wrote the poem 'In Flanders Fields' is also buried here.
Sidney Clibbens was part of the carpenter's crew on the HMS Defence, he was 43, and the son of Richard and Sarah Clibbens of Bristol. He died on the 31st of May 1916, when his ship was sunk by German gunfire at the Battle of the Jutland and is recorded at Plymouth Naval Memorial.
During World War II, another William, Private William Robert Clibbens of the 'Sherwood Foresters' Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, died on the 27th of May 1943 aged 29, almost certainly as a Prisoner of War working for the Japanese building the Burma-Siam railway. The harsh conditions the Japanese imposed meant that many died, films like 'Bridge Over the River Kwai' document a similar experience. He was the son of Harry William and Elizabeth and is buried at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Thailand.
I know this has been a long message, but I have found all this information fascinating. I would be interested to know if any of you know if you are relatives of these men. There is a good chane we are related, as it shows the rarity of the name Clibbens that just 4 are recorded dead from either war from all of the commonwealth, when they were 20918 Smiths. All this information and muh more is available on the internet if people are interested.

Hello,

No, sorry I am not related to any of these men. I have however, been to the cemetery in Thailand where many of the Allied War dead are buried. Most were troops of the British Commonwealth with a few Americans as well. The cemetery is beautiful and well cared for. As an American veteran I can assure the survivors of the war that the Thai people are looking well after your brothers in arms and comrades.

Re William George Clibbens.

William George Clibbens was my great grandfather. He was born in Leeds in 1888, eldest of 3 boys, the others being Percy Thomas Clibbens (born 1891) and Horace Burton Clibbens (born 1894).

Their father Joseph Clibbens was born in 1859 in Newsells, Hertfordshire, and had 5 siblings George (1848), Sophia (1851), Lydia (1854), Arthur (1857) and Benjamin (1861). they were the children of Thomas (1825) and Elizabeth (1826)

The three younger boys moved to Leeds at some point before 1881 and lived in Hunslet working in the railway industry.

I am currently researching the Clibbens ancestry but have not been able to progress my search prior to the 1861 census. If anyone can help with providing further information I would be extremely grateful.
