Ancil R Clendenin

I know the previous threads are very old concerning the parentage of Ancil R. Clendenin, however I did find on the 1860 Boone County census one if Ancil's daughters, Mary, was born in Cass County, Michigan. The Clendenin name is indexed as Clindenor on the census records. The folks researching this family may have already resolved the issue, but hope this helps.

Hannah (Clark) Clendenin, b.1818 NY, of Whiteside Co., IL, wife of Robert Gardner Clendenin & mother of Frank, Will, Cassius

I have an original carte de visite photograph of “Hannah (Clark) Clendenin, mother of Frank, Will, Cassius”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1870s, in Morrison (Whiteside Co.) IL, and Hannah looks to be in her 60s.

I found Hannah Clendenin in the 1880 census for Morrison (Whiteside Co.) IL, born about 1818 in NY. She lived next door to Frank Clendenin (her son), who was age 39, and Frank’s family. In 1880, son Cassius C. Clendenin (age 29, born IL), lived in Minneapolis, MN with his wife. Ancestry Public Member Tree shows that she married 3 Oct 1839 to Robert Gardner Clendenin in Whiteside Co.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Hannah Clark Clendenin.

My third greatgrandfather Andrew Glendinning was born around 1799/1800 and he had a brother named William. I am not sure about his wife's name but his son James Glendinning was born about 1834 in Londonderry and died in 1916. James son Andrew Glendinning was born in Ballykelly in 1857 and died in North Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1937. Andrew was married to Elizabeth Maxwell -- these were my great-grandparents.

Benjamin most certainly belongs to the United Empire Loyalist Clendinning family that settled in the Niagara District. I have a file on him, but do not have proof that his parents are John Clendenin, S.U.E. and Lydia Summerfield, but it seems likely. The family of John is elusive and difficult to clarify. He had two wives, Lydia Summerfield and Phoebe Pierce. I've had great difficulty proving some of this family. But, it's not my direct line, so more work could be done. Land records are the best bet for clues.
1st m:
[?] Jeremiah b. ca. 1818. m. Clarissa Martindale.
[?] Benjamin b. 1818 m.

GDAY:)
Been Awhile since i posted...But im studying the Book *HOUSE OF GLENDONWYN* at the moment written by a Cousin of my Grandfather. sydney claude Ellis Clendinnen ..GTClindining
I think GTC may have mixed up 2 wiliam Glendinnings.
Wiliam Glendinning Born 1680 Staplegorton, Apparently may have married Rose Ann Kirkpatrick( Apparently her sister Eugenie Kirkpatrick Married Napoleon 3)
Now Rose Kirkpatrick according to several Ancestry Trees Would have been 8-10 yrs old when she married William Glendinning...hmmmmmm Also this William Glendinning was Catholic His parents were William Glendinning at Castle and Margaret
Now the Other William Glendinning was born 1673 in Borgue Kirkpatrick, His Parents were John Glendenning and Maria Gordon
he was the one who went to quarterland and married Rose fisher there in 1713 in Killyleagh
This family of Glendinnings were Presbyterian

Apparently there is record in a library at kirkcudbright, in a Family Tree
of Glendoning Family.that states
William Glendoning succeeded to Meggarland and Barcroft in the Parish Of
Borgue in july 1690, He purchased the Estate at Quarterland in Co Down and
died there in 1764

So i think some folks including maybe GTC have confused these 2 Williams, Born around same period but from different areas
so interested in hearing from folks researching this lot
Thanks
Regards
Cathy:)

Hello Wendy,

Could you give us some more details? For example, I've made the assumption that your grandfather is alive? You said his name was Charles Burton Clendenin the second. Then you made the assumption that his father had the same name.

That's not necessarily true. If his father had the same name then your grandfather would probably have been Junior, rather than the second.

When was your grandfather born? Do you know the names of any brothers and sisters of his?

We may have the information you need and not necessarily be aware of it.

Too many Clendenins in WV to make this easy.

Thanks,

Sharon

Looking at the date and don't know if you have ever found anything out about William Glendining of Ireland who married Anne (Rosanne), sister to Robert Kirkpatrick of Glenkiln (ancestor of the Empress Eugenia wife of Napoleon III. He remained in Ireland and died in 1764. His will 16 Nov 1764 proved this in the diocesan court of Down. William's wife Anne was born at Barrel in Kirkmichael, shire of Dumfries. Then I have that a BIble belonging to John Waugh Clendenin of Kansas here in the United States records that three brothers John, Charles and James, born in Dumfries, Scotland, came to America between 1730 and 1750 These are the relatives I am currently working on by am also trying to find my Scottish, Irish and English roots for this name. I do know that my paternal grandmother's father, mother and one brother were from Rothwell, Yorkshire, England and have gotten a lot of information about them and know that they are family but want to make sure all these other people on Clendennen (that is how my name is spelled) side are correct.
Clendenin in Lebanon

According to the bio for my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Cosmus S. Clendenin in "History of Cumberland and Adams Counties, Pennsylvania" (Warner Beers, 1886, p492), Cosmus S. was born in Lebanon County to William Clendenin and Mary M. (Snoke) Clendenin. William and Mary Clendenin had three children, William (b.1827), the aforementioned Cosmus S. (b.1833) and Mary A. (b.1842).

The 1850 census for Derry Township, Dauphin County clearly shows William Clendenin (aged 50), Mary (aged 45) and the three children by name, as well as, apparently, Mary's father Henry Snoke (aged 75 in 1850). Everything connects the Cosmus S. Clendenin bio to this William Clendenin (including the shared trade of shoemaker).

The 1840 census only confirms head of family, but William Clendenin is there and the appropriate ages for most others in the family seem to be present.

In the Campbelltown section of "History of the Counties of Dauphin and Lebanon" (Egle, Everts & Peck, 1883, p219), there are a William (b.Feb1800-d.1874) and Mary Clendenin (b.Oct1807-d.April1877) listed as buried in the Salem Church (Luthern and Reformed). The dates seem correct so I am guessing this is the father of Cosmus S. Clendenin and, therefore, my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather.

What I am looking for is any information regarding William Clendenin (b.1800) and Mary Snoke (b.1807), such as where they originated from, parents names, property, etc. As a PA expat living in the United Kingdom, being so far away it is difficult for me to push further than the information I now have. Elsewhere (http://www.chm.davidson.edu/PAGenWeb/Q1998.html) someone asked about a "Cocmus or John Clendenin who are buried in Campbelltown, Lebanon co. circa 1780" and this intrigued me immensely given Cosmus apparently numerous times in the Clendenin family between 1833 and 1885.

We are hunting for Andrew Glendinning who signed his son's
wedding certificate in Londonderry 1859. His son William was my husband's great grandfather and he married Jane Milligan of Londonderry. We have William's will but can find no trace of Andrew unless he married a Nancy Purvis in Moneymore,co.Londonderry in 1833.He is said to be a farmer on the certificate. We are trying to link this part of the Glendinning family to the Londonderry Standard as William was its proprietor. We also think the family might have originally come from Scotland or Northumberland but cannot find a link from Ireland to either of these.I really am stuck: can anybody help me,please?
Janet Glendinning
Withey Family Tree

Thomas Rufus Clendinen, a Virginia Military Institute cadet who participated in the Battle of New Market, was taken to Harpers Ferry for burial from the last account we have. I'm helping a few VMI alumni who for the past two and a half years have been trying to find the graves of the all the New Market Cadets. We have successfully narrowed our list of about 290 cadets to less than 30 whose final resting place is unknown. Thomas Rufus Clendinen is one of the missing.

According to the Francis Gasch's funeral home book,Thomas R. Clendinen died 26 Mar 1910 in Riverdale, MD. The remains were moved to Union Station in DC and the funeral service at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Another news clipping states Bolivar, Va. is where he was taken for burial.

VMI archives say:
Thomas Rufus Clendinen, Class of 1867: New Market Cadet; Private, Co. D. Genealogy: Born- March 31, 1847, in Baltimore, Md. Father- Dr. Alexander Clendinen; Mother- Marie Louise Belt. Pat. Grandparents- unknown. Mat.
Grandparents- unknown. Married- 1st Wife: Alice Shriver; 2nd Wife: Mary H. English, in 1908. Children- 1st Marriage: 1st: Alice; 2nd: Rose. Career: Lawyer. Died- March 25, 1910, at Riverdale, Prince George Co., Md.

Any information you may have is greatly appreciated!

My website http://www.picturetrail.com/vminewmarket explains the Battle of New Market and has photos of all the graves we have found so far.

Thanks,

Sarah Reveley
San Antonio, Texas
Re: Charles Clendenin (1712-1793) ancestry?

I found a rundown of the Glendonwyn Baronage in an old book entitled "Baronage of Scotland" - Written in old english, but transcribed to internet, so somewhat more readable.
As indicated, William has been assigned as a son of Alexander, 9th Earl of Glendonwyn. This is a stretch to begin with, based on dates.
The more important fact, however, is that, while Alexander did have a son named William, according to "Baronage of Scotland" this William and his brother, Simon, both died young. Was William born to a later Glendonwyn earl?
10th - Robert: one son, who succeeded him.
11th - John: George, James, and William - all died without issue - and Robert..
12th - Robert: George, James, John, and Isabelle - all died without issue - and Agnes
13th - Agnes: One son, who succeeded her.
14th - Robert: Did have a son, William, BUT by the time he was born Charles was already in the U.S.

It is probable that Charles Clendening did, in fact, trace from the Glendonwyn family, but it had to be through a different branch which derived from an earlier son who did not accend to the family leadership. --- but who????

Alexander had a brother, William of Garquhinye, of whom the Glendonings of Mochrum in dominio de Parton, were descended. ... That would be a possibility.

Also, there is a record that, indeed, Mary Douglas was daughter of the 4th earl of Douglas and Margaret Stewart. She married the first Simon, rather than the second, though.

This information from the Glendonwyn Baronage history as recorded in "Baronage of Scotland"
Charles Clendenin (1712-1793) ancestry?

Charles was one of my grandmother's ancestors. He and his brothers immigrated to the U.S. in 1746. I have pieced together his background (successively) as:
William Glendenin (1680 - 1764)
William Glendenin (before 1614 - ?)
Alexander Glendening of Parton (abt 1563 - 1616)
John Glendening of Parton (1510 - 1560)

Oops! If these dates are correct Alexander cannot be a son of John. Also, a record of the Glendonwyn Baronet indicates that son William died young - it does not say how young and whether before or after marriage. From what I have right now it would appear that there must be at least one missing generation between William and Alexander.

Now, from what I have found to date, John ties back to Scottish Royalty - the Stewart line and Robert the Bruce. So far I have not had a chance to investigate his mother's tie, but supposedly his grandfather, Sir Simon of Glendonwyn and Parton, married Lady Mary Douglas, daughter of Archibald, fourth Earl of Douglas, and Princess Margaret Stewart. To date, however, I have found no evidence that Archibald and Margaret had a daughter named Mary.

The Question: Has anyone found proof of these connections, or has someone found some names and made connections to generate a non-existent connection to old world royalty?

Ulysses S. G. Clendenin, son of James and Elizabeth, married Cora D. Blacksley in St. Joseph Co., MI 8 Sep 1889. This record names Cora's parents as John Blacksley and [?] Riddle. The mother's name is unclear and could be Susan or Tamson. Is Cora the same Cora who is identified on the 1880 St. Joseph Co. census as the 7-year-old daughter of John Williams and his wife Tamson Riddle Williams? Were there 2 Coras?; if not, was Cora a Blacksley or a Williams? Are there any Clendenin researchers who know Cora Clendenin's parentage?

In your post on ancestry.ca in 2005 you said:-

William Glendening (b 1680 d 16 Nov 1764 in Quarterland, Ireland) and Roseanne Kirkpatrick (b 1682, Dumfries, Scotland) married in 1700 and look to have had 7 children; Jean, Elizabeth, John, Charles, James, Archibald and Andrew. William was the son of a William Glendening (b 1626) and Margaret ?.

Now, I am writing to ask what information you might have about these Glendening children in this tree.

My interest is in an artist born in 1840 to parents, James and Sarah Glendening. James' parents were John Glendening, who married Jane Jackson in Middleton Tyas which is the north west corner of Yorkshire.

This John Glendening came at one time from Carlisle or just north of there which is getting towards where the Glendening family were to be found during the Border Wars of the 1500's and early 1600's.

So I have teh problem of getting back to John's origins about the end of the 1700's.

On seeing your comments I had the feeling taht you might have some links through these children of William and Roseanne, some of whom went to Northern Ireland and perhaps (I am hoping) some who stayed in the English/Scottish borders.

Can you let me know what you can and if you are still following all this along.

The artist I am researching was very prolific and his son has work in London's Tate Gallery.

Thanks

David

I just noticed your earlier posting. Did you ever get any info on your family? I am from Paris TN and my mother's maiden name is Clendenin.
I might be able to get you in touch with some of the numerous Clendenins in the area.
Best regards,
Mark Mann

My husband and I have put together a book on "History of Lewis Township". It is Book 1 and contains the census from 1840 to 1930. All of the Clendenins are in there, as well as the Kilborns, Apker, Gray, etc. We have Book 2 coming out very soon with over 100 pictures of Lewis Township which will be followed with Book 3 and 4. For Book 1 , contact me at my e-mail, jamsarash@chilitech.net, phone 570-998-2784 or purchase at Bittner's store in Trout Run, or Gustonian Gifts in Williamsport, PA. Cost of Book 1 is $20.00 plus $5.00 if it is to be mailed.
Clendenins

There was an early thread about Denver Lynn Clendenin. I am a great granddaughter of his. I am through his wife Mary Isabel Pauly. I would like to get as much information from Denver's side since we were not given anything since Isabel divorced him. I believe that Carolyn Foster who had posted on an early post is deceased so if anyone can spare some info, my email is jonahs_momma2005@yahoo.com Thank you everyone in advance for your help!
Sarah Stevens

Christina;
I don't know if anyone told you but, Charles did not found Charleston WVA. It was his son, George, who named the town after his deceased father. Locate the book Tran-Allegheny Pioneers by Hale circa 1888 and it tells some pretty interesting info about the Clendenins.
