I'm Rick Clear of Rnadolph County, Indiana. We have several generations of Clears in this area but Elihu is unfamiliar, but listed killed at Custer's Last Stand. Elihu was at Major Reno's side and is listed as from Ranolph County, Indiana

Rick,
Elihu Franklin Clear was the son of Isaac Clear & Urana {Sallee} Clear & the grandson of John Jacob {Hell} Clear & wife Elizabeth Haurt.

Isaac & Urana m. Dec. 24, 1840 in Preble Co. Ohio. Apparently Isaac died by 1848. I am still looking for Isaac's death date & burial place in Randolph Co. Urana {Sallee} Clear m. Robert Smiddy on March 9, 1848. The 1850 Randolph Co. In. Census, Huntsville Twsp. list Elihu as Franklin age 5 & gives the last name of Smiddy for him & his brothers, James age 7 & Samuel age 3. The 1870 Cass Co. In. census list Elihu as age 15 still listed as Smiddy along with his two brothers but they are Isaac Clear's sons.
What Clear's do you descend from?

Charlene {Sallee} Sidwell

My spouse is a desc of Jacob Hell/Clear and Elizabeth Huart, though I believe Elizabeth's name is not Huart but Hunt. There are not Huarts or anything close in Preble Co, during or before her lifetime, but quite a few Hunts.
However I show Isaac Clear/Hell son of Jacob and Elizabeth as being married to Anna Talles not Urana ???
My wife is a desc of David Clear/Hell son of Jacob Hell/Clear who married Anna Jones, who was Cherokee.

Thank you for clearing me up on the Elizabeth's surname as being Hunt instead of Haurt.
Yes the posting of the Ohio Marriage of Isaac & Urana's is mis-transcribed. Urana is mis-spelled on so many docs. & etc. as well as Sallee. Most of the Ohio inf. has Sallee spelled as Salle, who knows how they came up with Talles??

Hi Terence,
Elihu was the gr gr grandson of Johan Michael Hell b. May 9, 1792 of Codorus Twsp, York, Pa. They were of German Descent. His grandfather Jacob Hell had the name "Hell" changed by act of legislature to it's English equivalent, "Clear".

I am descended from Samuel Sallee & Elizabeth Croft. These are the parents of Urana Sallee. I had attached the marriage of Anna talles to Isaac as I had thought it was right. I am glad to know that others had the same info.
I am adding the info of the Hell / Clear name change to my genealogy history. Where exactly is this info at?

Hi. Just read your post regarding Elihu Clear, killed in the battle of the Big Horn. I believe that Elihu is a descendant. My last name is Clear and the ancestral name is HELL. I would interested in comparing and sharing information with you. I would be interested in your source that explains the name change from HELL. I am using a computer at LDS Family History Library. Please contact me offline at jrclear@gmail.com. Look forward to hearing from you.
