My grandfather's name was James Benjamin Clear married to Carrie Dixon. James was born 2/17/? died about 1936 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. In his youth he travelled to Grey Eagle from St. James, Minnesota. The family legend was that the name was changed from Hell. I have always been curious for more information about this.

Hi Deanna,

The man of whom you speak I believe to my father's great uncle. James and Carrie moved from what was known as Bad Axe Co, Wisconson to Minnesota just before the Civil War. If this is the same Clear there are about 4 generations of Clear's from the Todd Co area in MN. Hell, the most common spelling is a German derivative. When translated from German it becomes either a descriptive adjective (clear) or proper noun (Clear). Have lots of info, willing to share if you can contact me. Look forward to hearing from you.

Since I posted the last message I have received more information from a distant cousin. I know that I am descended from Jacob's brother, John that there were 3 brothers (The third was Henry.)who changed their name from Hell.

I am very interested in any additional information you may have about the family. I hadn't heard about the Wisconsin part of it. My older sister told me they arrived in the Todd County area from St James, MN. (I was also born in the Todd County area.)
