Hi Deanna. The Hell family names was changed in the 1830-1840's. Clear is a translation from German meaning, "clear, bright, brilliant." The Clear family lived in Bad Axe, or what is now Viroqua, Wisconsin before Minnesota. About the time the Civil War broke out the family had moved. Jacob Clear was arrested during that time frame for an axe murder, but the sentence was later commuted by the governor. My dad's family still resides in Todd County. Let me know what information I can you help you with. Glad to share.

Vickie. It has a long time. I think my last post to you was back in 2001. I was trolling Ancestry and looking at posts. You metioned your dad John used to have a newspaper articel that you wanted a copy of. Do you know what was in the article? The times we visited your mom and dad were memorable. What special people they were! Let me know what you need and if I have I have it I will send it to you.

I am sending this from a genealogy library because I don't have an Ancestry membership.

Hi. I just read your post. There are two Jacob Clear's that are prominent in the CLEAR family history. One left Wisconsin just as the Revolutionary War broke, and the family moved to Minnesota. The 'other' Jacob Hell descendants eventually moved west and settled in Oregon. If you have any questions I can help answer, would like to hear from you. I am using a computer at LDS Family history center. Please contact me off line at jrclear@gmail.com.

Hi. David Clear and Amy Anna Jones (the "Annie"..she actually went by Anna) are my great-great-great grandparents. Her sister is Margaret- married to Joel Hell who is a cousin of David's. The name was changed by David's great grandfather, because Clear is the English derivitive of the German spelling of Hell. My grandma once told me that the running family joke was that they "Cleared outta Hell". LOL.

Also- there are 2 Jacob Hell's David's acending tree and more when the Hell surname was changed to Clear. David's father's name was Jacob as was his grandfather. Jacob Sr. is Johann Michael Hell's son (he immigrated to PA from Germany via the Lydia from Rotterdam in 1749).

I am concentrating my research on this family right now. I will let you know what I find.

I just checked out this website- and am letting you know that while SOME of this is accurate... I just spotted some things that I KNOW FOR FACT are NOT in my Grandmother's line. So I will be contacting them for corrections...but I cannot say this enough...records...records...records. :)
