Hi, I am a descendant of teh Cleal family that originated in Engalnd, somewhere around Dorset. My Grandfather was a Stanley Theodore Cleal, born in the Channel islands of England. His father was a Giles Cleal born also in the Channel Islands, Stanley's his Grandfather was a Thomas Cleal born in Dorset around 1824. he went to the Channel islands from Dorset to work in teh stone Quarries there as a young man of around 20 years old. There he married an Eliza Clarke. I have searched the 1851 Dorset census trying to find a connection but have not been successful. If anyone has a connection to these people I would be more than happy to talk to them.
Thanks
Paul Kelly

I don't know how far you have got with this, as the query is an old one, but I can supply some information.
John Cleal b. 1806 married Charlotte b. 1806 and they lived in Bridport, Dorset where they had a son Thomas b. 1827 at Bridport. He married an Eliza Clarke b. 1828 at Bridport in the early part of 1848. Following their marriage they moved to Guernsey in the Channell Isles where they had a large family. William b. 1852, Thomas b. 1854, George b. 1857, Elizabeth Jane b.1858,Giles b. 1864, Matilda b. 1866, adolphus b. 1868 and elizabeth b. 1871. Of these children, Giles married and girl called Eliza Stuckley b 1866 at Guernsey, and they also had a fair sized family, Frederick Giles b 1889, Henry George b.1890, Olive Eliza b. 1892, Stanley Theodore b. 1893, Nellie Emma b. 1895, Mabel Florence b. 1897, Albert Walter b. 1899 and Emily Lydia b. 1901.
The original John Cleal and Charlotte also had a son Charles Cleal who wed in Bridport, and one of their children a Frederick Charles Cleal also moved to the Channell islands for a period and then moved back to Portsmouth in Hampshire where he raised a family, one of whom, Queenie Violet Cleal, b 1892 in Portsmouth married my great uncle Arthur Bawden, and that is where our two families meet. Distant but connected,

1841 and 1851 census records for the Channel Islands, Guernsey, show a Julia Cleal born about 1839 to Hugh and Mary Cleal. She is gone by 1861 but the parents remain in guernsey with her siblings. Hugh was born in Dorset, according to a later census, but I have no more detail than that at the moment.

Does this help or do you already have this?

Hello
My grandmother's sister Emma May Lawrence b Somerton Somerset 1877 married William Henry Cleal in 1907. I believe he came from Bradpole, Dorset. There is a William Cleal aged 5 in the Union Workhouse Bradpole in 1881. I cannot trace any parents. Does anyone know of any? It seems so sad a child of 5 in a workhouse!
