Roger
My great-great-great grandfather was Henry Cleal who emigrated to the United States from, we think, somewhere near Yorkshire England. We believe the date of emigration was 1854. He was born in 1809 and married Charlotte Fuller(?)who was born in 1813. They had twelve children, two of whom were buried at sea on the voyage to America. They settled in Ransom IL where he died in 1874 and she died in 1902. Their son George (1835-1918)was my great-great grandfather. He fought with Sherman's army during the Civil War and was a corporal in the 127th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He fought at the Battle of Vicksburg and was with Sherman on the march from Atlanta to the sea. He was married three times. His first wife died young and childless. His second wife Harriet Pacy (1837-1905) divorced him and married a cousin in Arkansas. I know nothing about his third wife. His daughter Elizabeth (1863-1951), my great-grandmother, married David McCann (1853-1933). I remember her slightly as an old woman sitting in a chair in Ransom, IL. I was born in 1945, so didn't have a close relationship. Her daughter, Mildred McCann Brewick (1894-1989)lived her entire life in Ransom, with occasional trips to Chicago. All of the people mentioned here were farmers in LaSalle County IL. Mildred's son, my father, Gayheart Millard Brewick (1915-1991) was the first to leave the farm. He obtained a BA from Northern Illinois University, an MA from Northwestern University, and did work on his PhD at the University of Chicago. For most of his career he was Superintendent of Schools in Schiller Park IL. In 1939 he married Lois Pineau (1914- ). He is buried in Sun City AZ, and Mom lives near us in Evergreen Colorado. My brother, Craig (1949- ), lives in Sacramento CA. I'd be glad to share any additional information with you and would be delighted if you could help me trace the Cleal lineage back further.

Hello David I stumbled across this message site and saw marianne's and Rogers message along with yours. I have been corresponding with Craig your brother. I live in Grundy county next door to Lasalle. I am the Scott Marianne mentioned. I came across a couple boxes my Grandmother had sealed with family information and photos. My Grandmother Mabel was Mildred's sister. I have a nifty picture of George and Simeon Cleal in their union uniforms. If I can assist you let me know. I found Joseph Pacy ,Harriets second husband and cousin running around Chicago and Newton county, Indiana. Bio in Newton county lists his parents. Also have letter from Harriet to my Grandmother post marked Alabama. One of the McCann girls actually visited her in Alabama. I also am gathering information. Don't recall if we ever met, I am one of the younger cousins of that generation. I am glad to assist and compare notes. Take care. Cousin Scott

To Roger Cleal re your message that we all come from one village in the UK - I would hazard a guess that the village is
South Perrott in Dorset on the Devon/Somerset borders? Certainly in the 1760,s there were dozens of Cleals.

Dear Mike, Come to my home e-mail address I'm sure there is a lot that we can help one another with. How far back does your tree go, are you joined to my branch. My tree currently goes back to 1721 perhaps you can take it back further.
Yours sincerely,
Roger Cleal

Roger I cant contact you because I dont know your e-mail address. I dont even know what country you are in. If its America then none of my people went there as far as I know. It seems likely that all the Cleals are related as its such an unusual name and as far as I can see did originate in South Perrott. However I have only just found out about that village ( which I have visited ) and have to do a lot more work to really get a handle on the family connection. My oldest relative so far traced is John Cleal born about 1771 but I would hope to go a lot further back given time.It means a holiday to visit the area and that may have to wait for later in the year.

Dear Mike, Sorry I thought you would receive the whole message with my E-mail address on any way here goes by the way I live in Warwick Please reply as it would be good to see where in the picture you fit in. It has recently been a great joy to me that two ladies both independantly wrote to me about 9 monthes apart and I realised once the second one replied and sent me more in depth details of her tree that they were related. The ironic thing is that they both live in Melbourne, Aus apart an hour's drive away.
Yours sincerely,
R.C.Cleal. (I am in the phone book)
