CLEAK Clock Makers

When I was much younger (I'm now 65) my grandmother told me that our family line of CLEAKs were descended from famous clock makers. I had long forgotten that conversation but was reminded of it recently when I spotted antique clocks for sale on the web, 18th century clocks made by Adam CLEAK and his son John CLEAK.

Adam CLEAK
Lived: Bridport, Dorset, England
Died: 1809 Upottery, Devon, England
Wife: Polly

John CLEAK
Lived: Bridport, Dorset, England
Died: 1850 Huxham, Devon, England
Wife: Elizabeth

I cannot deduce the relationship, if any, between these two and the progenitor of my own family line: John CLEAK (born c1778, Dorset) and his wife Sophia BUSBACKS/BURBANKS (born c1779, Bridport, Dorset). John and Sophia were married 05 Aug 1798 in St Mary's, Bridport, Dorset.

Does anyone have Adam's descendant line mapped?

Should I rush out and buy an antique clock? ;-)

Thanks for the info, Vincent! Now I'll try researching from both ends of the pedigree in the hope that I can make a connection somewhere in the middle.

As for Cleak clocks for sale, I suggest just Googling for 'Adam Cleak' in quotes. I found two examples right away. Now that I see their urls, perhaps 'Adam Cleak' in quotes plus the word 'auction' would be the most effective query.

Send me a picture if you buy one! They're a little out of my price range! ;-)

Cheers!

Hi Vince!

I believe you just provided me with the key!

On my direct line I have George William CLEAK (born c1806) who married Emma Elizabeth WARR (born c1809) in Bridport, Dorset, on 20 Aug 1832.

I think all I have to do now is follow the bread crumbs!

Cheers!

Barry

Hello Barry

In that case we are very distance cousens, George William Cleak was also married to Emma Emery after Emma Warr died in 1847 and my line is from their son William Cleak.
How does your line go back to George William Cleak and who moved to Canada?

If you have any more question just email me on cleak73@hotmail.co.uk

Hi there, just messing around on the net and found your details about Adam Cleak.
I have a clock by him, which is marked as being made when he lived in Upottery. If your interested before I advertise it for sale, as my wife says I must sell some of my collection as I have 5 grandfather clocks. Would you like a photo of it.
Sadly my clock is not in it original case, but it is of the same era of about 1800. I have not had the painted dial restored as yet, and it looks very faded , yet even after 200 years it still keep excellent time,

John

Offer of clock photo

Hi John!

How kind of you to think of us (Cleak descendants). Yes! I'd love to have a photo of it. 'Twould be the next best thing to a portrait of Adam himself!

Send it to bntaylor(at)shaw(dot)ca.

Good luck with the downsizing of your collection. I imagine that this process must be a little painful for you.

Cheers!

Sorry that I am so late in contacting you but I have only just come across your thread. On 13th April 2013 I saw a longcase CLEAK clock for sale in an antiques shop at Marlborough. I am interested in the Cleall family of Bridport descendants of which were clockmakers and wondered whether there was a connection. I have only just had a look at the subject, without finding any links.
Just for your information.
