I have researched this with my aunt who is a Smoot
and knows where all the claborns are buried and living, so forth.
Their name started with the spelling Claiborne then it was Clayborn
then it was Claborn. This shown in many death certificates.
Generally anyone with these spellings are related.

This is all very interesting. I ran across this message board while trying to find family history. I would love any info on where to begin my quest instead of randomly searching the web. Any suggestions? I know that i have been perplexed by my names spelling for years. I have heard a lot of so called reasons but none so far hold water. I live out in Oregon and have only a few people here who share the spelling above. Thanks for the info so far and feel free to drop a hello. Thanks.

She is very helpful. I know my grandmother moved out to California area near Oregon and we have alot of
family out there. I know there is several family members out there. I have some paper dating back about 1820 on this side.

Angela, I've been researching the Claborn's and Smoot's for years. My GrGrGrandfather Benjamin B Claborn (son of Alfred and Catherine Claborn) married Lurinda Samantha Smoot(daughter of John Riley Smoot Lucinda Fleeming) in 1867. I'm sure there's a connection there somewhere. I can be reached at schamplin@prodigy.net

Michael, go to the Genforum geneology web board (www.genforum.geneology.com) and go to surnames. Then find Claburn and Claborn. Try other spellings also. There are many postings of the early history of the Claborns in the eastern states.
