I am James R. Clabby born in 1941 Bridgeport,Connecticut. I have information which indicates the family first settled in Providence, Rhode Island and is listed in the 1870 Census. The head of household was John Clabby age 36 married to Marie Kennedy age 25. Their children were James age 4, Winifred age 3, and John age 1.and Patrick. Also residing with them was Ellen, John's mother age 66. Presuming I am correct the family moved to Norwich, Connecticut sometime between 1871-1874 where Margaret, William (my grandfather) and annie were born. James, my grandfather's brother was the father of Jimmy Clabby a world famous boxer in the early 20th century. James moved his family to the Calumet Region of Illinois when Jimmy, born in 1890 was 4-5 years old. My grandfather, William married Anna Walsh and moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. They had 5 children, Mary, Winifred, Joseph, James (my father) and Lawrence. Joseph born in 1913(Joe) is still
living. His two sons Joe and Bill still reside in Farifield County, Connecticut. I am in the process of writing a biography of Jimmy Clabby, the boxer and have collected a great deal of data on him including many photos, news and magazine articles and books which include elaborate detail of his career and life. Any information you have on the extended Clabby family would be much appreciated.

Betty and Lawrence are my aunt and uncle. Lawrence was my father's brother. There were 5 in his family including Mary, Winifred, Joseph and James E Clabby,(my father). I have quite a bit of information on the extended family. My grandfather William Thomas Clabby had siblings one of whom was James Clabby whose son, James Jimmy Clabby was a famous boxer in the early 20th century. I am in the process of attempting his biography as he was really a world figure in the sport. I would be happy to share more information and am very glad to hear from you. I have been communicating with another member of the family in Waterford, CT. I can send you some photos of the family via Gmail or to your other email address. I lived in the Long Hill section of Trumbull on Pinehurst Street in early childhood. Thanks for getting in touch

I forgot to mention that Paul Clabby is the third of Larry and Betty's children and is my Godson. Marilyn died some time ago. The last I heard Bob is in a home under care and Paul is the curator of The John Slade Ely House, a prominent art gallery in New Haven.

Hello Mary Ann. You might remember that we communicated some time ago. My side of the Clabby family also came from Roscommon area and emigrated to Rhode Island. John and Maria Kennedy. Clabby had some children there then moved to Norwich Connecticut where my grandfather William Thomas Clabby was. I wonder if there were two Clabby families which migrated to Providence. I have nearly finished a biography of Jimmy Clabby, the boxer. Went to Australia recently--a long story. Jimmy fought there for nearly 7 years. Hopefully we can find a way to connect your family to ours.

Hi Jim,

William T would be my great grandfather on my Mom's side. I ran into your post while looking for my Mother's father (a Powell from PA). Her mother is Mary Terrell (Clabby). Winifred is my great aunt. Winnie was still in CT and Mary lived in Mineola, NY.

Don't search often as to avoid running into anyone still part of the huge rift, insanity, and fighting in the Clabby/Terrell clan (Mary, Al, 1 terrell dtr & 1 powell dtr), much of which seemed due to Al and Mary in addition to my mother's difficulties. So I keep a low profile to not start up anything and find any last remaining younger parties with an older mom not needing to be further enticed or frightened.

Anyway, someday maybe I'll find out who her dad was (I don't think they told her the truth about his first name) and Mary and the male Powell were divorced within a few years of the marriage, resulting in the ex-communication of Mary.

I dated Marilyn Clabby from West Haven, CT, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Elizabeth Clabby and the sibling of Robert and Paul Clabby. After graduating from UCONN in 1974, she married Andrew Jasnos and I believe had a daughter. She died in 1996 at the age of 44.from complications due to diabetes. She was a beautiful girl.

Thank you for your information. I am Marilyn Clabby's first cousin. Perhaps you know of my connection to her family. Her father, Larry was my uncle, as he was my father's brother. I graduated from UCONN in 1963. Unfortunately I have not made contact with either Paul or Robert Clabby. I sent Paul some information by mail some time ago but never received a response. He is curator of an art museum in New Haven. Sadly, Robert has been in a home somewhere in the New Haven area, as he has had various problems for some time. My wife is from West Haven; she is a McDermott. Her brother, Dave McDermott owns a car dealership in East Haven.
