I'm descended from G.W. Clabaugh (aka George W. Clabaugh) who moved from Cumberland, Maryland to Carroll County, Maryland about 1873. I have it on pretty good authority his father's name was Edward (or E.A. Clabaugh). Does anybody have any information on this Clabaugh branch? G. W. Clabaugh was married several times with L. Ellen Kemp being my ancestor. G.W. and Ellen had three children: George W. Clabaugh, Harry Morris Clabaugh and Lucy Clabaugh Hewson. There are several articles on the Internet about an E.A. Clabaugh who owned a famous race horse. Because of the dates, I believe he also might have been the son of the Edward for whom I am searching. I'd appreciate if you might contact me directly at my e-mail above.

Re: Cumberland MD CLABAUGHs
My greatgrandmother was Lucy Clabaugh Hewson. She was devoted to her brother Harry Morris Claubaugh (for whom my grandfather and father were named) who was on the Maryland Supreme Court.
The Hewson homestead is Antrim in Towson, MD. I am trying to determine the Morris connection. These families originate in Philadelphia.
Best of Luck..Caroline

Looking for my grandfather's family who lived in Leon County, Texas (I think). Grandpa was Thomas Arthur Clabaugh but he went by "Jack" and lived in Oakwood, Leon, Texas. He was married to Jessie Marie (went by Marie) Martin and they had two sons but were divorced, maybe in the early 1920's. Grandpa's father was William Rufus Clabaugh b. 1858 (in Texas?) and his mother was Elmira Mc Clary (according to the family Bible) b. 1846 & d. 1894. William Rufus was the son of John C. Clabaugh & Mary Yarborough (again, according to the Clabaugh Family Bible). Does anyone have any info on ANY of these people? I can find LOTS of info on Clabaugh's back east but when they got to Texas the info dries up. Thank you in advance for any help.........Julie

Re: Cumberland MD CLABAUGHs
I am also a descendant of George Washington Clabaugh from his first wife Emily Hall whom he married 14 Nov 1835. Their daughter, Helen Adelaide Clabaugh is my great grandmother. I do not know if there were any other children from this marriage. She married Henry Henderson of Phila. One of their children was mygrandfather, Walter Gwynne Henderson, who married Maud Richardson of NY. My mother, Helen Clabaugh Henderson (1903-1990) was the second of their 3 girls.
I have a great deal on information on the descendants of Helen Adelaide Clabaugh and would be happy to share.

Caroline -
I'm not sure if you will get a copy of the message I sent in reply to the post from 2002 so this is to make contact.

Re: Cumberland MD CLABAUGHs
George Washington Clabaugh (1808-1880) had another wife, L. Ellen Kemp, whom he married in 1855. They had GWC Jr, Harry Morris (a justice for Maryland) and Lucy (1860-1940)(my ancestor). I am trying to find the Morris connection.
Thanks for your help Robert.....we are kin!

Re: Cumberland MD CLABAUGHs
The dates you provided helped alot. I grew up in Phila and the Morris name is important going back to Robert of Colonial times. I do not have any Morris connections and cannot help you.
One interesting thing I found after your message comes from the 1870 US Census. George W. Clabaugh age 62, and your ancestor Ellen (Lavinia Kemp) Clabaugh age 40 were living in Baltimore with their children: Harry (age 14), George (11) and Lucy (age 9). Also there was Evan Clabaugh (female age 19). Evan's age puts her birth abt 1851 and before the 1855 marriage of GWC and Ellen. Perhaps this is a child from the Emily Hall marriage that is my line or a relative from another Clabaugh family. I'll try to find out.
Good luck with the Morris research and thanks again for your reply.

Re: Cumberland MD CLABAUGHs
Caroline - I just looked at a June, 1930 Bachrach photo I have of Helen Adelaide Clabaugh Henderson's 90th birthday party (my great grandmother), which has over 30 of my family including Dr. Addinell Hewson and Aunt Lucy (Clabaugh)Hewson your ancestor. If you will email your snail mail address to RRMATZ@comcast.net I will send you a copy along with a key to the names. Dr. Hewson was from Philadelphia as were the Hendersons. Robert

Caroline
Good deal. For now I'll send a high quality copy off my printer and sometime next year I'll have photo paper copies made for you and other members of my family. I hoped you would be pleased. Very best for the Season and next year.
If I get anything for the Morris in Harry Morris Clabaugh I'll let you know. Meantime I would like to hear back if anyone finds the parents of George Washington Clabaugh and his relationship to Edwin Augustus Clabaugh (1818 - ??). Edwin started the Mount Vernon Distillery #1 in Baltimore in abt 1850. GWC was in the same business and I suspect Edwin (b. 1818) was his younger brother, almost certainly a relative. My family legend is that GWC was the first distiller of Mount Vernon whiskey.
