I am researching the line of Martin CLABAUGH, who served in the Revolutionary War and his wife Mary Margaret HOUSEHOLDER. They lived in Washington co MD until about 1802 when they relocated to Huntingdon co PA where Martin died in 1822. I would like to find information on Martin's origins and establish any connection to the other Clabaughs in Washington co MD. If you would like to exchange information, please contact me at my email below.

I'm trying to find my Clabaugh line to Geroge W. Clabaugh born 1808 Maryland. His third wife was L. Ellen Kemp and my ancestor. In the process, I found Martin Claubough, passenger on the Polly in 1765 from Rotterdam to Philadelphia.

I have Martin's Rev War pension papers which list all of his children and there was no son George. There was also a Frederick Clabaugh in Washington co MD who was of the same age as Martin. I suspect he is related somehow. He could possibly be the father of your George.
May I ask if you found the emigration info on Martin in the Philadelphia passenger lists?
Thanks
Pam

Thanks for your reply. Here is the link to the immigration record: http://www.genealogy.org/~palam/idx_c.htm. My Clabaugh information is quite murky. My great grandfather was George Clabaugh b. March 29, 1860 in Taneytown, Md. His Mother was L. Ellen Kemp and his father was George W. Clabaugh (b. 1808). I just found a Catherine Clabough who was born June 8, 1809 and married Washington Gwinn. The dates are very close and she was also from Carroll County, Md. I find G.W. Claybaugh in the Md. 1850 Census in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. Please e-mail me directly if you have time. Ellen

Pam, I found your Martin Clabaugh [Claubaugh] in Maryland and Delaware Revolutionary Patriots, 1775-1783, Frederick County, Maryland p. 71: "Clabaugh [Claubaugh] Martin, Soldier in the Pennsylvania Line who married Margaret (no last name given) about 1772 in Hagerstown, Maryland, and enlisted there at the time of the Revolution. He applied for a pension on April 14, 1818 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. In 1820, he was aged 77 with a wife Margaret, aged 69. He died July 15, 1822. Hiw widow applied for a pension (W3222) on March 25, 1840, in Huntingdon County, aged about 88, stating they had moved from Maryland in 1801 or 1802. The soldier's daughter, Catharine Clabaugh, aged 54, applied July 23, 1850, in Huntingdon County Pennsylvania for herself and the other children of the deceased widow, to wit: Martin Claubaugh, Margaret Summers, Jacob Claaubaugh, Elizabeth Nightime, Catharine Claubaugh and abraham Claubaugh. Widow died on March 8, 1848." [Ref: T-665]

Thanks very much for posting the info. I have his Revolutionary War records from the National Archives. I've been trying to find out where Martin was prior to Washington co MD and if he is connected to the Samuel Clabaugh there. I believe it is likely they might be brothers.
Thanks again
Pam

My understanding is that Martin's parents were John and Anna Katharine (Acht) Glabach.

My branch of that tree:
John & Anna Katherine (Acht) Glabach
Martin & Margaret (Householder) Claubaugh
Abram & Nancy Ann (Cromer) Claubaugh
Martin R. & Martha Ann (Rodkey)
Rolandus and Rhoda (Stultz) Clabaugh
Joseph Francis and Cora A. (Hetrick) Clabaugh
Charles Joseph & Shirley J. (Gorsuch) Clabaugh
Kevin L. & Sherry M. (Gunsallus) Clabaugh

I am still trying to find proof of Martin’s origins. His Revolutionary War pension app does not given his place of birth, but in 1818 he gave his age as 74 which would put his birth at around 1744. The IGI has a Martin Clabaugh born around 1743 in Stuttgart, Germany but with no other specific info nor an original source. This book “The ancestors of Charles Wesley Clabaugh and Louise Zimmerman Clabaugh and their descendants” says that a Martin Clabaugh, a German immigrant arrived in Philadelphia in 1765.
Here is some of the info from that book
> Martin Claubough, a German immigrant sailed into Philadelphia in 1765. His papers were signed with his mark which tells us that he did not sign his name, but probably pronounced it to the English speaking port authorities in his gutteral German and they wrote it the way it sounded to them. Israel Rupp, himself a German, in his book Thirty Thousand Immigrants, p 37 translated Martin’s name as Klaubach. Martin paid freeman’s taxes in Lancaster, PA in 1772 under the name of Klapbaugh (Penn Archives, Series 3, Vol 17, p 280). After serving in the Revolutionary War under several different name spellings, he returned to Washington co, MD and worked his trade as a cooper. After tracing property transfers, we know it was the same man who was recorded as Clabough in 1778, as Clappack in 1782, as Clappach in 1785, as Clappaugh in 1788, as Clapbaugh in 1792 and as Clabaugh, also in the same year. “

The land records do have a good trail from Washington co MD to Huntingdon co OH after the Revolutionary War, but there is still not much to really connect this man with the Martin in Lancaster co PA and with the German immigrant in 1765.
Another researcher has sent me info (with no source and I have not been able to corroborate) that he was a passenger on the Polly sailing in 1765 from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. Again none of these tidbits have proof that they are the same Martin as the man who married Margaret Householder etc. I’ve also been researching Frederick Clabaugh of Frederick and Washington counties, MD whose census records would suggest he is of an age similar to Martin. There is a strong possibility that they are related, perhaps brothers, but I have not found any info to indicate that this is so. I have not found any naturalization records in Maryland or Pennsylvania. His pension records have a lot of detail on his Rev War service, but nothing about his whereabouts prior to enlistment or about his origins.
If you have any data that does provide some proof of his origin or to connect the Rev War Martin with the immigrant, I would love to hear it.
BTW, I decide from Martin and Margaret’s daughter Elizabeth who married William Nightwine.

Hello!

My husband is a descendant of Frederick Clabough/Clabaugh of Frederick County, Maryland (c. 1700) and we have been searching for family links. We would love to have any information and sources you have on Martin Clabough et al if you are willing to share.

We have been investigating a possible link between our Clabough/Clabaugh family name and the Glabach name(and other spellings). I see that you have both names in your listing. Can you point me to a source that links the names?

Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

The first mention I have of Martin Clabaugh is that he was a passenger on the "Polly" from Rotterdam to Philadelphia in 1765. The IGI has a birth of about 1743 in Stuttgart, Germany but I have not verified this. Martin served in the Revolutionary War and received a pension. He payed taxes in Lancaster co, PA in 1772 and ended up in Washington co, PA where he married Mary Margaret Householder in around 1772 (from her testimony in application for a widow's pension). By 1810, he moved his family to Huntingdon co, PA where he died 15 July 1822.
In researching Martin Clabaugh in Maryland, I noted Frederick Clabaugh who lived in areas near Martin and suspect they may be connected. I found him in 1800 in Fancy Town, Frederick co, MD and in the same place in 1830.
I found probate records in an index for Washington co, MD 28 Apr 1849 for Frederick P Clabaugh (prob not the Frederick I have been looking for but perhaps a son?).

That is all of the info that I have on Frederick Clabaugh but someday hope to find if he is connected to my Martin.
