Just discovered that my Seattle/Paso Robles, CA Claassen's were in Newton, Kansas before that ( my mom forgot to mention that her father might have been a mennonite!). Anyway, does anyone have info on Claassen from Kansas and the Mennonites?
Thanks, Nancy

My grandmother Agusta Gertrude "Gussie" Claassen was born in Harvey, Newton, Kansas in 1889. Her parents came with the Mennonites to Newton, KS from the Ukraine. I think it was in the 1870's. Her father was Aaron/Arendt Claassen(b. 18540. her mother was Anna Kliewer (b. 1856) there is information in the Michelin, Kiev, Russia Churchbook . Nichols was another name in this group of people--and my ancestors. They came when the RR was offering free land because the new czar was going to require that they become Russian citizens and pay taxes. They had been exempt because of earlier promises by an earlier Czar who enticed them to move to the Ukraine from Prussia/Germany.

The Claassen-family we researched came from the Schleswig-Holstein area of Germany and we believe that they had close connectios with the Menonites from West Prusia. During the period 1680 to about 1725 members of my ancestors emigrated to Holland from where they dispersed as members of the VOC to the Americas, Rusia and South Africa. A book on the Claassen-family in South Africa was published in 2001 also giving a report on the Claassens (Clauszen) of the Dithmarschen-area staying at Delve. My GGGGgrandparent, Claus Clauszen moved from Delve to Holland and from there to South Africa in 1920 as employee of the VOC.
As far as I know the Claassens originaly came from Denmark/North Germany. We would like to confirm this statement and this could only be done if the dates of the movement of Tom's ancestors could be verified. I would rather say that the dike workers came from Germany. Tom, where can I obtain the book you refer to.I believe that there is also a book on the Menonite Claassens that I would like to get. Could some one please advise me where to get it. My e-mail address is claassen@mweb.co.za. Postal address is Box 8293, Centurion 0046, South Africa. Skype address: nicclaassen.

Not many have the double letters in the last name - Claassen. My Grandmother Lissette Claassen married Albert Fred Heimbruch. They lived in Royalton WI for many many years. Grandma was a menonite, but they are from Germany. Did any of your ancestors go through Germany?

Please return e-mail to mott53@wi.rr.com.

Thanks

One branch of our family went to Newton KS, while the other settled in Weyauwega, WI. My GG father was John Claassen and GG mother was Margarete Claassen. They were Mennonites fro Prussia.
