My grandfather was Oscar Claassen born in Seattle Mar. 7, 1892. His parents were Frank and Ann Claassen. He had six brothers - Adolph, Gustav, Henry, Herbert, Jacob, and William. He was married to Edna Ann Gallagher in 1917 in San Francisco. They had two daughters - Jane (Joan)Marie Claassen Saleeby and Elizabeth Ann Claassen Joyce (my mother). He was a pharmacists who had drug stores in Riverside (lost in the depression) and had a drug store in Tranquility, CA (near Fresno) when he died in 1960. I think the oldest son,Adolph, went to Alaska, but the others went to Paso Robles, CA and were ranchers and opened the Paso Robles Mercantile and the Paso Robles Pharmacy.
If you have any information about any of these Claassens please contact me. By the way, they considered themselves to be German.
Thanks,
Nancy

I could be related to you.

My great-great grandmother was a Claassen her name was Catherina (Katrina) I think she had a sister named Anna. They were German and had migrated from South Russia originally. Her father's name was Johann (John) Claassen from Kansas.

My fiance is Jason Claassen and his father's name is William Frederick Claassen. His father's name was also William Claassen. Jason's father is from Minnesota. Not sure if they are any relation to you or not but I thought I would try.

Jenny,
Thanks for emailing - sorry it took me so long to pick it up! I don't think there is a connection. My Claassen group started in Seattle and then came down to the Northern California area of Paso Robles and Salinas. One went to Alaska and it is possible that the got to Seattle via Canada, but I don't know that. Let me know if any of that rings a bell with your fiance.

I spoke with my fiance's mother and unfortunately there isn't a connection. She said none of the names sounded familiar. She has been doing alot of geneology research. Thanks for your time in replying to me.

Hi Robin,
It might be a fit. Here's what I know about Anna (not much!). She was in Newton, Kansas in 1887 where one of my great uncles (Gustav) was born. Her maiden name was Mathies (or Matthies). She married Franz Claassen (in Kansas?). They moved onto Seattle, WA where my grandfather, Oscar, was born. They then moved on to California, specifically the Paso Robles/San Luis Obispo/Templeton area. Anna was my Great grandmother, but I may be older than you! Let me know if any of this rings a bell.
Thanks,
Nancy

Nancy,

I will have to ask my grandfather about her relations. I knows a little about them. I do know that one of them founded the menonite church in Kansas. So we just may have a match.
Thanks for responding. I have don't know a whole lot about genealogy and I am new at searching for ancesters.
I will have some time this summer to do more research.

Nancy, my name is Tracy and I'm doing these surches for my fiance, Edward J. Claassen. His father, James William Claassen, was the son of William Claassen the rancher. Edwards dad, Jim , owned and ran Paso Robles Mercantile up until a wicked step-grandson came in and bullied, lied and stole the store and the huge ranch which was supposed to go to Jim, Edward, and Edwards brother Steve. This is why I'm working on this search. The step grandson to Arthur M. & Nellie Claassen was not to inherit anything and was not even allowed on the property, then one day Art was gone and the step grandson moved on to the property, kicking his own mother and sister off the property and there he sits, because all the Claassen men are too passive to fight him, but I'm not. It's the principle of it all. Art hated him and banned him from the property. Anyway, another reason I'm doing the search is beacause both of Edward's parents are gone and most all the family. They believe they are the last 2 or 3 Claassen men alive, so I'm trying to gather as much info for them as I can. You mentioned they considered themselves to be German? Thats interesting, I don't know if the guys knew that. Hope this helps in your search. Talk to ya later, Tracy

Hi Tracy,
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, but I'm away from home and the only available email is when I go into town (30miles) to the library, so I haven't checked it in a long time. Anyway, I pretty sure we are the same Claassens. My grandfather was Oscar Claassen and at one point he worked at the Paso Robles Mercantile as a pharmacist. His parents were Franz and Annie Claassen and he had a bunch of brothers - I don't have my files with me, but I think William was one of his brothers. I will be home in California (I live in San Francisco) Elizabeth Anne Claassen Joyce and her sister Joan Marie Claassen Saleeby are both still alive and well. No Claassen brothers though, but Oscar's brother Gus who lived in Salinas outside of Fresno had sons and I think his descendents are still down in that area. I am so glad to hear from you and will write when I get home.
