I am wondering if my last name Ciufo derived from Ciuffo? Anyone know? My grandfather was from Tufo di Minturno.

i think its just the opposite. my great grandfether spelled it ciufo and we now spell it ciuffo. my family also came from tufo minturno my great grandfather came to bridgeport ct with 2 of his brothers. unfortuately he passed away in 1921 and we have no records of him other than a death certificate on file at the church where he was buried. email back if there is any connection his name was domenico ciufo. thanks

I've searched into it and to no avail I have not found anything relating your grandfather yet. However, I have found out something interesting. I've found out that the name Ciufo comes from the word Ciuffa which means a tuft or band of hair on the forehead. Have you or anyone else found this to be true. Or does it originate from somewhere else? Also have you seen a family crest? In speaking to my grandfather, I have found out that Ciufo's were land owners and originated from Firenza, but ended up at Tufo starting in the 1500's, my grandfather, his father and gradfather were born in Tufo. Just want to add that Salvatore Phillipo Ciufo married a Mazzuco - anyone have info on that?

We are looking for Ciufo relatives. We believe that we are also from Tufo. We have Philip, Ross, Frank, John as first names. Anyone have any information?

Ciuffo/Rasile
I am also researching Ciuffos from Tufo di Minturno. Here's what I have so far:
My 2nd Great Grandfather-
James Ciuffo 1869-1952, married to Mary Popio(?) 1878-?,both from Tufo di Mintuno, arrived in USA 1890.
I think his parents were:
Antonio Cuiffo (1797-1857, married to Maria Rasile (1801-?), both from Tufo di Mintuno.
Possibly Antonio's brother was Francesco Cuifo, married to Maria Ciufo. -this I haven't documented, but someone passed this on to me. May not be correct.
Hope it helps. If you have any ifo on these people, I would love to know.
Thanks
