I am looking to make contact with any descendants of Domenico Ciucci, and to learn more about his origins. Domenico Ciucci was born in Italy in about 1826. He married Mary Chevalley who was born in New York (in 1830s) of French born parents. The Ciuccis are in the 1860 Albany census with their NY born children, John (6), (Mary) Louise (4), and Margaret (2). In 1880 Albany Census they appear again with their children and their children's spouses, Kate Phillips, James Phillips and John A. Burns, respectively. I have noticed only a few Italians in Albany in 1860. Were reasons for immigration of these early Italian immigrants different, in general, than reasons for Italian immigrants who came later?

I am interested in learning more about Mary Chevally. She and her Ciucci family appear in the 1880 Census of Albany, NY living next door to my gggrandparents John and Marilla (Lillie) Chevally. John, like Mary, was born in NY in the 1840's to parents born in France. I have some additional information regarding John's parents who first appear in Albany City Directories in the late 1830's.

Yes, I have this 1880 census too, and am convinced that John Chevalley and Mary Ciucci were brother and sister. Note also that John and Mary's husband, Domenico Ciucci were both stucco workers. I hope you can confirm for me the names of John's parents. I believe they were Claude and Margaret Chevalley. The only thing I have to go on is the 1850 Census with entries "Clod Chavelow", 58 yrs, Broommaker, born in France, wife Margaret, 43, John 11, and "Fanny" (handwriting is poor) 8, both children born in NY. Besides the 1860 census where Domenico works in a candy store, I have the 1862 City directory where he is now a "brushmaker", apparently making a go at his father-in-law's occupation. I have Domenico in 1889, 1990 and 1991 City directory as a stucco worker. I have not searched the city directories further, so I would be very interested in the information about John Chevalley's parents that you have. Mary Chevalley Ciucci was my ggg-grandmother. In the 1880 Census note that Domenico and Mary had three children all apparently living under the same roof - John Ciucci, stucco worker; Louisa Phillips (my gg-grandmother) and Maggie Burns. Then add Mary's brother John's family.

Your ggg-grandmother was a new ancestor for me to add to my tree. I knew about John (my gg-grandfather) and Fanny (Frances). I also knew that there were siblings but by 1908 or so they were all dead but John and Frances. Do you know when Mary died? Where she is buried? And how did you know her maiden name was Chevalley?
Some of this information I gleaned from John Chevalley's civil war record. It's about 50 pages long. I will send you a copy via regular mail if you would like a copy.
I look forward to hearing from you again!

I just reviewed John Cheavalley's civil war record and found that Domenico Ciucci was a witness at John's wedding in 1858. Also your ggg-aunt Maggie (Margaret Burns) and her husband John Burns submitted a statement swearing to the fact that John and Marilla (Lilly) were married only to one another (for pension purposes).

I do not know when Mary Chevalley, wife of Domenico Ciucci, died nor where she is buried. I have the death certificate of her daughter, Mary Louise Phillips (born Mary Louise Ciucci, who was married to James Phillips). Mary Louise Phillips died on June 1, 1922. The following information is provided there on her parents, "name of father: Dominick Ciucci, born Italy; name of mother: Mary Louise Chevalley, born Albany, NY". Mary Louise Phillips and her husband James Phillips are buried at St. Agnes Cemetery in Albany. I would indeed like to have a copy of John Chevalley's civil war record.
