Hello Michele,It seems your Grandfather and my father have the same first and last names. My father came here in 1947 and his father in the earlier part of the century,His name was Angelo Cioffi, They were both from Cervinara,Province of Avellino.I see this name is a common one there but there could be some type of relation? I live on Long Island,NY and would like to hear from you,in the mean while I will get his specific location in the town and some other surnames if possible. I think my grandmothers maiden name was Mercaldo, Thanks,Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Jerry, I think my grandmother, Vittoria (Mercaldo) Taddeo may be a relative of yours. She was born in 1901 in Cervinara. Her father was AngeloAntonio Mercaldo. One of our relatives traced the family tree back to the 1700's and I believe there is an Angelo Cioffi mentioned. I'll have to check my records. She married Umberto Taddeo in Cervinara and moved to Williamsport Pa where they owned an Italian restaurant called the Columbia Hotel. We had Cioffi relatives who lived across the street from her. Their father's name was Aniello Cioffi. Let me know if you want any additional info on the Mercaldo's. My grandparents occasionally went to New York to visit relatives. My grandmother also had a brother, Frank Mercaldo who lived in New York all his life after coming to the USA. I know she had other relatives there. Hope to hear from you. Ann Berninger Cleveland, OH

Hi- My grandfather, Paul Cioffi (1896-1991) was a well-known physicist/engineer who was born in Cervinara. He traveled with his family to New York in 1898, and I was able to find the shipping records that showed his parents and his brothers' and sisters' passage on the boat from Italy. This branch of the Cioffi family settled in the Harlem area, but my grandfather later moved to New Jersey. Paul's brother, Raphael became a powerful monsignor in Brooklyn who was linked to Regina Pacius for many decades until his death about 25 years ago.

My grand-father was Gabriele Taddeo, son of Beniamino Taddeo who was married to Angela Mercaldo. My grandpa had 2 brothers Luigi and Giovanni both lived in the USA in Pittsburg, moved from NYC. One sister her name was Angela, she lived in Syracuse, NY. Great-grandfather came to the USA in 1904, he was 19 years old. I do know he had brothers, because Isidorio Taddeo was my grandfather first cousin, and zia Gennarina married a Cioffi, she was old lady who had a jewel's store in Piazza Trescine and her son Don Ciccio Cioffi. Can you tell me more about the family in Pittsburg? My uncle Gabriele Taddeo was one of the last of the Taddeo who lived there, he has a son also named Gabriele, who is approx 40 yr old. Who else was there?

Hi Gabby, I'm not familiar with Taddeo's in Pittsburgh. My grandparents moved to Williamsport, PA around 1920 or so from the Avellino area of Cervinara. Taddeos were a huge family so I'm sure we're somehow related. My grandfather was the only one of his siblings to move to Williamsport. One brother (whose name I can't recall) lived in NYC. His brothers Ciro, Dominick and Alfredo moved to Toronto Canada. He had several brothers and two sister who stayed in Cervinara. We did have distant cousins by the name of Gabriele and Benjamin Taddeo living in Williamsport but I never really knew them. Could they be related to you? Do you know if you had any relatives in Williamsport? My mother knew them all but unfortunately she passed away a few years ago. My grandmother whose maiden name was Mercaldo was actually related to my grandfather before they married. I believe her grandmother was a Taddeo. I have tons of info on the Mercaldos but not much on the Taddeo side. Keep in touch. I'll let you know if I come across a connection between our two families. Hi, My grandmother, Maria Domenica Cioffi, was born in 1908 in Cervinara, Italy. Her father, Salvatore Cioffi, was a blacksmith and he came to the US in 1905 and went to Laquin, PA, Bradford County, Barclay Mountain to work in the coal mines. He and his family eventually ended up in Rutland, VT where many people came to from Cervinara. I am looking for information on his time in PA. You can contact me at jsromano1@gmail.com. Thank you!

My grandfather, Antonio Bove was born in Cervinara, Italy October 2, 1894. His father was Raffaele Bove and his mother was Cristina Cioffi. I don’t have their date of birth and no idea when they died but believe sometime after World War II. I don’t always subscribe to Ancestry so if think there is a connection my email address is culloden@sympatico.ca
