We are having a Cina Family picnic on Aug. 16, too! In Northern New Jersey. The children, grandchildren, and some extended family of Salvatore (Sam) and Pietronella (Beatrice) Cina -- originally from Bivona, Sicily. I stumbled upon your posting while doing some online research about Cina family history. Having difficulty attaching a PDF of our invitation (will be happy to send by e-mail if interested in seeing it).

I believe the Salvatore Cina from Bivona that you mention was my great grandfather's brother, unless there were several Salvatore Cinas from Bivona. Did he go to jail by chance in the early 1900s along with a Vincent Giglio? Both of them were from Bivona.

I have no doubt there is a relation and there must have been several Salvatore Cinas (just as there were 4 among my grandfather, brother and cousins). The one who went to jail couldn't be my grandfather who was born in 1906. My best guess is that it was his uncle (and namesake) who would be my great grandfather's (Vincent) brother as well -- which I believe puts us in the same place on the family tree two generations down. Or, it could have been his grandfather. I asked my mother and she is uncertain about any paternal uncles as well as her great-grandfather. But, she agreed that there must be a relation as the name Vincent Giglio is one she recognizes from more recent generations (either a relative or simply considered "family" by origin of Bivona). Thanks for connecting on this! Martin

Got a huge kick out of this...I would put money down on the table that this Salvatore was my grandfather's uncle -- judging by the years and other info. First, I can see a number of my relatives staring back at me in this photo! Also, my grandfather's father (Vincent -- and most likely this guy's brother), also was a cigar maker who moved to Tampa with his wife for just a few years and then returned to Sicily. My grandfather was born while they were in Tampa. Thanks for sharing...

No problem. This Salvatore Cina was definitely my great-grandfather's brother. But for the life of me, I can not remember my great grandfather's name; it was likely either Joseph, Vincent, or Peter as those names repeat themselves a lot. If you're still living in North Jersey, it's possible we have the same great grandfather. My grandfather was Joseph Cina, married to Maria Dai. They lived in Lodi.

I'm certain we're related as my family is also from Lodi where my grandfather Salvatore settled and lived until he died about 12 years ago. He had a brother Joseph (whose wife was named Ida) who briefly lived in Lodi and then settled in Nutley. I'll bet your great grandfather was named Joseph -- and was probably a brother to my great grandfather Vincent who named his two sons after his brothers. I am very intrigued by all of this and will sit down with my mother and try to piece this story together. By the way, when I clicked on the photo of Vincenzo Giglio, I almost fell out of my chair because there is a VERY strong family resemblence to some of my relatives -- who knows how these people were intertwined! I'll let you know what I learn from my mother (will see her next weekend).
