Or, the Onofrio you are referring too might be related to the Onofrio from my family. The fact the last name, Ciliberti is used, and that both of our families are from Petina, Italy (a small town), makes me believe there is some kind of connection.

I HAD THE WRONG BIRTHDATE OF MY GRANDFATHER,ONOFRIO ZIRPOLI(MICHAEL SMITH). HE WAS BORN JUNE 11 1885 AND DIED IN NOV. 1965 IN ALBANY NY. HE WAS BORN SOMEWHERE IN ITALY. I DON'T KNOW WHERE. HE CHANGED HIS NAME TO MICHAEL SMITH AFTER HE CAME TO UNITED STATES AND HE MARRIED IDELLA SICKLES.THEY HAD 6 CHILDREN. ONE OF THEM WAS MY DAD,ALBERT ZIRPOLI. HE WAS BORN IN 1919 AND DIED IN 1980.IF ANYONE KNOWS ABOUT MY GRANDFATHER OR HIS FATHER'S RELATIVES,PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

DAN, I JUST READ THE RECORD OF MY GRANDFATHER ON ELLIS ISLAND AND THEY MUST HAVE IT WRONG. MY GRANDFATHER WAS BORN IN 1885(ONOFRIO ZIRPOLI).THEY SAID THAT HE CAME TO U.S IN 1921 AT THE AGE AT 18 YRS OLD. THAT WOULD MAKE HIM 36 YRS OLD.RIGHT?ALSO MY DAD(ALBERT ZIRPOLI) WAS BORN IN 1919 IN ALBANY. I HAVE HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE TO P ROVE THAT.HOW COULD ONOFRIO COME OVER HERE IN 1921 WHEN MY DAD WAS BORN IN ALBANY IN 1919? THIS IS VERY CONFUSING.

Sorry it took so long to respond, I was away on business. The only thing I can think is that there were two Onofrio Zirpoli's. I just found out the Onofrio I was looking for went by the name "Jimmy," and owned a bakery in Philadelphia. He's definitely the Onofrio listed on the 1921 manifest at Ellis Island.

Do you know who the parents were of the Onofrio you're looking for?

I THINK IT IS THE ONE THAT ARRIVED SEPT 11,1903 ON THE ELLIS ISLAND FILE. I DO NOT KNOW WHO HIS FATHER WAS. MY GRANDFATHER WAS BORN ON JUNE 11 1885 AND DIED IN NOV 1965. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT 18 YRS OLD. WHEN HE CAME OVER HERE. I THINK THE INFO ON ELLIS ISLAND IS WRONG. THEY HAVE HIM AS ABOUT 1 YR. WHEN HE CAME OVER.

THANK YOU,
MARY MURTHA

This message may not have anything to do with the CILIBERTI name but you may find it interesting. I will quote a small section from some research I had done some 30 odd years ago. Excuse the grammar but this is how it is written.
"Carmine (Monaco) lived in Petina and was married there on December 6th, 1815 with a young lady of the same town for she was a good seventeen years younger than him at the time: Serafina CARLEO, the daughter of Gerardo and Porsia Manguso." ect, ect....
Included in these research documents, are the names of many people who, over the past 250 years or so, have married into the Monaco family. Several names are the same those that appear on the message board. The name CARLEO is only one example. The given name Onafrio, is very common because it the parton saint of Petina. Another given name that is very common is NICOLA because it's the name of the church in Petina.
My grandfather (Carmine Monaco) came to America in 1880 at the age of 16. I never knew him. He died in 1917 when my father was only 7 yrs old. The fact that I knew nothing about my ancestory only made me more determined to find out about it. I have been to Petina several times, but always with a translator.

Okay, so here is another long shot. My great grandmother was a Carleo from Petina, Italy. I don't know much about her parents, just that her Dad was named Leonard and her mother was Gelsomina (born in 1865). Interesting thing is that I just found documentation that shows that the Carleo name was spelled Carleyo....at least that is what it says on my Grandfathers birth certificate. So now I am going to see what I can find on the slight variation of the name Carleyo! Let me know if there is any relation to your family!
