Does anyone have any info on the background of Wenzel Cihlar? He immigrated from Bremberg? in 1906. He was married to Johanna Hofer. We would like to add to our family tree.

Hi Cherie,

My husband's side includes Wenzel Cihlar. What I have so far is that Wenzel Cihlar born in Austria about 1878 and immigrated to the U. S. in 1907, was naturalized in 1919 and appears on the 1920 Ohio Census married Johanna Hofer and had the following children: Joseph Cihlar born about 1907, Andrew C. Cihlar born Feb. 20, 1909, Theresa R. Cihlar born March 8, 1910, Anna R. Cihlar born July 23, 1911, Helen R. Cihlar born Aug. 8, 1912, and Bertha Cihlar born about 1913. Anna R. Cihlar was my mother-in-law's mother.

I am just beginning to do research on these lines since my married to Charlie in July of last year. Would love to share any and all information with you. Please let me know how you descend.

Thanks,

Lauretta Ferranti

Wenzel Cihlar was my grandfather and Johanna Hofer my grandmother.
They emigrated from Austria Hungary. They lived in a village called Brennburg, which is located a short distance from present day Soporon. I have visited Brennburg, which now has a Hungarian name (Brenburgbanya?). I have visited the village and met the widow of Wenzels's nephew and her grandson, Stephan.

Sopron

Sopron sits close to the Austrian border and is a treasure trove of historic buildings. With foundations from Roman times, the 185 ft. high Fire Tower has become the symbol of the city. Also worth seeing are the numerous old churches, such as the Dominican and the Evangelic, a synagogue dating back to Gothic times, and former burgess houses, like the Storno and the Fabricius, and the Caesar House with its Venetian-style balcony.

Wenzel Cihlar was orphaned at an early age. He worked in the coal mines from early childhood. When he married, he worked in a locomotive works. Wenzel and Johanna had five children in Europe, but all five died within a few weeks from a diptheria epidemic. Due to this and other disappointments, he and his wife decided to emigrate to America. They sold everything and accompanied by Johanna's father and mother, went by train to Antwerp and took Red Star line passage to America. They went to Doylestown, Ohio where Johanna's aunt (a Kaltenborn, I believe) lived. They purchased six acres of land from the Kaltenborn's and lived there the rest of their lives. Wenzel worked at Babcock and Wilcox Company in Barberton, Ohio for 25 years. He also ran a small coal mining peration on the side with his sons. He and Johanna had eleven more children.
I am in possession of all their family papers. The Hofer papers go back to c. 1812.

My cousin Cherie (Tom) Parrish, daughter of their youngest son, Henry, has all the family photos. She lives in Oberlin Ohio, but I don't have her address.

I will be happy to share additional information with you. Interested in you connection to the family.

Hi charles! This is Melanie Cihlar Starkey ( Cherie's sister). We have always been interested in our ancestry. Could not locate u & Dick said to just google you ( impossible). Lol. I just happened to run across this in my search. We were recently contacted by a woman in cleveland whose Grandmother was Maria, one of Wenczel's sisters & she has their marriage license. ( her great grandfather wittnessed the ceremony). Also her 91 yr old uncle visited wenczel in Doylestown. I have only 1 family photo they had taken and a couple of personal ones that mom ( Buella) took that I would be happy to share. If you are interested in sharing it would be wonderful. Contact me please. Hope all is well with you. Mstarkey52@yahoo.com
