I am also researching the cihlar family. My husbands grandfather came to NY in 1880 from bohemia. Area we think was Kutna Hora. He(Josef) was only about 11 yrs old. parents came year before. They were Frank cihlar and Anna (Marhan) Cihlar. Had daughter Anna and small son with them. Stayed in MY about 10 years and then settled in Jackson MN and Josef later moved to Cadott, WI. Other family last names were Skarda, Kubale and Vajgrt.

Hi, My name is David Cihla. I was wondering if anyone can verify that my surname is a derivative of the surname Cihlar? My father was born in the Fairbault, Mn area. ( maybe St Paul?) He came from a very large family approximately 11 siblings. My fathers name was Henry Cihla. no known birth certificate was ever registered. He died in 1983 in california. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi David - I am not sure if these are variations of the same name, but I CAN tell you that my family was listed as Cihla in the compiled Bohemian boarding lists and when I received the original boarding list, the name was spelled Cihlar. There were quite a few Cihlars that migrated to MN (mine went to IL). In fact, the Cihlar that was killed at Pearl Harbor was from MN. http://home.sullivan.k12.il.us/teachers/kracht/wwii/arizona_...The "r" originally had an accent mark over it making sound sort of a soft "zh" sound some people may have just dropped it. Hi David - A bit of trivia: I was on the Czech/English translation page and Cihlar came up as brickmaker, while Cihla came up as brick. So, they are certainly related. The page is at http://ww2.fce.vutbr.cz/bin/ecd
