In doing my research regarding my branch of the Cicalo family - which is from Lagonegro - Chiaramonte area - Lucania - There were, within the same town and seemingly within the same families different spellings. Cicalo/Cicala/Cicale all seemed to be somewhat interchangeable. One has to remember that in a small town in an uneducated area last names were a mere formality. The local priests all spelled names different on documentation. More than likely, the local population were very much like early small town America e.g.. "John who lives near the lake," John's son who lives near the lake, etc. These folks were uneducated - they weren't permitted nor were they afforded the luxury of education. Yet another reason that"Ameriga" was such a goal...

Hello Dorothy... My name is Rose and I am researching relatives on my grandmother's side of the family. Carolina Palazzolo was my grandmother's sister. I have records indicating that she married Antonino Matteo Carmielo Cicalo and also records indicating that her husband's name was Michael Cicalo. I've tried to no avail to understand what and why these two names are connected to Carolina.

I have an Ellis Island immigration record showing that she is joining her husband Matteo Cicalo in Michigan and is traveling with her 2 year old son Francisco. The name Mike appears on several death certificates associated with Carolina including her own death certificate in 1913 and a daughter Dorothy who died in 1918.

Further - Carolina's mother's maiden name is Leonarda Fontana however the Caleca name also appears in our family history as well. My maternal grandmother's firstborn daughter lists Maria Caleca as her great grandmother, but it is not clear from her notes whether Maria is on the maternal or paternal side of the Palazzolo or Fontana family. Leonarda married her 1st cousin Francisco Paolo Fontana after her husband Francisco Paolo Palazzolo died when my grandmother was only two years old.

Near as I can tell, Leonarda placed my grandmother (Rosa) in an orphanage for a period of 4 years. I suspect but do not have proof that she (Rosa) then might have stayed with her sister Carolina's family in Castellamarre until her immigration to the US. Carolina's first three children were born in Sicily and the fourth in the states. My grandmother's family were living in Castellamarre (listed on the Ellis Island immigrantion records) which is very close to Palermo. This record shows my grandmother and her brother Natale leaving their mother (which I thought at first was Josephine Leonarda - but after studying the handwriting closely realized it was Leonarda).

I wondered myself about the spelling on the Cicalo name and whether it was Cicalo or Cicala. I see that you are spelling Palazzolo with an 'a' at the end. The issue is in the handwritten documentation and who is doing the writing. I was wondering if there was an available birth certificate for Matteo Cicalo as well as a marriage certificate to Carolina Palazzolo. This might only be available in Sicily - but it could help with clearer identiy. Also, I've been in touch with someone named Eva living in Michigan who says Matteo was a family relative as well... she mentions that Matteo used both Michael and Matteo because of possible connections to the underworld. He was shown as having been in prison in the 1910 cencus in Columbus, Oh... She mentions that his death was possibly a murder... but I haven't been able to locate newspaper articles related to these two incidents. Do you have any information about this? I would think Michigan newspapers surely would have a couple of articles.

All of this makes me wonder if I have the correct person for my aunt Carolina's husband. My mother has been able to recall their 4 children and this matches records I've found. I need some help on the clear identity of Matteo or Mike and why these two names were used for the same person. Can you help with this?

Hi,

I just saw your message. I saw that all others Cicalo were originated from Italy, that`s why you didn`t receive any answer from them.

Your ancestors were Romanians from the Romanian province of Bukovina, then occupated by the Austro-Hungarian Empire (since 1775 until 1918, when Bukovina reunited with Romania).

The name was TICALA (with a comma under `T`, pronounced TZYKALA). Cicalo is only the english phonetic transliteration for Ticala. They were many Romanians Ticala wich arrived in Canada from Bukovina before WWI. A part of them established themselves in Montreal, others in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Are you related to the Ticalos (Cicalos) from Montreal ?
