I am trying to find info on my dad's family. His dad was Andrea Cicala. Many in the family spell the name differently. My branch spells it Cicola. My dad's brothers spelled it Cicalo. So, I am not sure of which is the correct one.
My grand-dad Andrea Cicala was married to Maria DiPaola. Are these names familiar to anyone out there. Hope so. Thanks
Marie

The names you are asking about I have never heard of.
You are correct about the spelling, it is spelled many
different ways. I believe the Cicala was the original way the name was spelled in Italy. How the o was placed on the end
of the name instead of the a is a mystery. I hope you
find the information you are looking for. I'm trying to
find the data from Italy now on my family. Good Luck.

Marie,
I am also trying to find information on my dad's faimly. Our last name is Cicalo, and my grandfathers brothers all spell their last names differently. I believe there were four brothers (including my grandfather) and the name was spelled as Cicalo, Cicolo, Cicala & Cicola. Were you able to find any information regarding your family?
Thanks,
Laurie

Hi Laurie
I have found some information. My grandfather Andrea or Andrew Cicala ( which I believe is the "true" spelling") came to NY from Collesano, Italy in 1905 with my grandmother Maria (DiPaola) my Aunt Josephine and an infant. I don't know of any brothers he had and none to my knowledge came over with him.;By a wild coincidence my new neighbor is from Italy and when I mentioned that my ancestors came over from Collesano he nearly fell over. That is his village. He went there and brought me pictures of it along with some people there with the Cicala name. I am going to write to them and hope that there is a translator around.
Do any of my names ring a bell to you, or the town of Collesano?
Love to hear more.
Regards
Marie

Dear Marie,

my name is andrea cicala my grandfather, named andrea too, was born in collesano so did my father,Renato Cicala, in 1920.
I do not live anymore in Collesano or in Sicily but i still travel there from time to time, although rarely since i did not maintain any relatioship with any family/individual in the village.

I assume from your e-mail we have some common background.

I wish you all the best from Italy

best regards

andrea cicala

Hello Andrea...I was so happy to receive your posting. Perhaps we are related! My grandfather came to America in 1905. (Andrea ) Much of his family is still in Collesano. I have just come into contact with my Grandfathers nephew...Gioacchino who lives still in Collesano. As luck would have it my husband and I recently moved and my new neighbor is from Collesano. What are the chances of that? Not only that ,but my neighbors uncle in Collesano, happens to be good friends with Gioacchino. So, when I gave my neighbor my family information for his trip to Italy, it was easy for him to find my family there. We are planning a trip to meet our "new" family this winter.
As my grandfather and yours share the same name ( I am not sure if they are the same person) Perhaps they were cousins?

Could you give me some dates and some more information so maybe we can find the link.
Did your grandfather come to America?
What is your fathers name? and Approx. birthdate?
My grandmother was Maria DiPaola and she accompanied my grand father to America along with their children Guisippina, Rose and my grandmother was pregnant with my father Rosario.
My grandfather had 3 brothers who I believe stayed in Collesano. They were Giovanni, Giacinto and Giuseppe .
My cousin Gioacchino's father was Guiseppe and his mother was Rosa Borgese.
I would love to hear from you. You may write to me directly if you would like : kidkamp@optonline.net
I hope to hear from you soon.
Best Regards.

Hi Laurie
We communicated briefly months ago and thought you might like to know about the success I have had searching for my Cicala Roots.
It is a very odd story that convinces me further that we live in such a small world.
I searched the Ellis Island site and found the ship manifest showing my grandfather Andrea Cicala and my grand mother Maria DiPaola's arrival to the U.S. in 1905. The manifest gave the the town in Italy , Collesano. I never had this info before. Now as luck would have it we moved recently and our neighbors are very Italian. We have become close and one day my neighbor asked what town my family came from in Italy. I told her Collesano and she gasped. "That is my husbands village" Well, I don;t have to tell you the excitement that followed.
My neighbor went on his yearly trip to Collesano to visit family equipped with all the info I knew about our Cicala Roots.
When my neighbor returned he asked me to sit down and not get too excited. He showed me a photo and asked if I knew any of the people in the photo......Oh my, It was my grandmother, along with many of my aunts and uncles. He was so happy that he had found the right family.
It turns out that my neighbors uncle is close friends with my cousin Gino Cicala.
Gino took my neighbor into his home and gave him a multitude of photos and information to share with me.
Gino doesn't speak english and I don't speak italian, but we communicated by phone with my neighbor as the translator. To make a long story short (?) my cousin gino has been looking for his american family for decades. He is so happy to have found us . We are planning a trip to Collesano this winter so we may finally meet. We have exchanged photos , letters and e - mails. Gino's grandaughter is the only one who can speak english so she has been a go between for us. So, that is my story. As someone interested in their family links , I thought you might enjoy my story.! I hope that you have had some success also. You may contact me at kidkamp@optonline.net if you would like . Hope to hear your response.
Best Regards,
Marie (Cicala) Lanier

Kenny, I was the widow of your uncle Kenith W. Chouccoli. He and I were married in 1975. He died at home in our bed with a massive heart attack on Thanksgiving Day in 1977. We were together for 5 years all total. I too, have been trying to do research on the Chouccoli family and have only found them on census. Your grandfather Pete was a dear man. I loved him very much. He was very young when they came to the states. I don't know how he and grandma Louvenia met, but I do know that she told me stories of how grandpa Pete's mother did not like her because she was not Italian. They were in the great flood in Ms and had to travel by foot. They had to camp out on top of the levee in the delta. and they finally ended up in Leland Ms. I tried to find them on the census in Leland but have so far not found them, the Pete Chouccoli family so far. The only census I have not checked out completely is the 1930, which is the last one available. I do know that Petes fathers name was Jasper, but don't remember Jasper's wife's name. It was an odd name. Please reply to me directly. My email is scoginm1@earthlink.net
