My brother and I are researching our Chwala family from Bay City and/or Pinconning, Michigan. Our mother was born there in 1912 to Michael and Francis Chwala (both from Poland). Is there anyone out there with Chwala Michigan ties?

I am also researching Chwala from Pinconning, MI. the 1920 US Census has Michael and Francis, but on ancestry.com it shows up as Michael Chivala, the 'w' misinterpreted as 'iv'. There you will find your mother listed, if you haven't found her already. One of Michael and Francis' children, Celia, is the great grandmother on his father's father's side of my grandson. I see that Francis immigrated in 1910, Michael in 1900. I am trying to locate where Rzymsko is on the map of Austria-Hungary. Francis is from Frysztat, also in 1910 in Austria-Hungary. Any family data/pictures would be appreciated.

Also, it would be of interest to have a picture of Michael and Francis' tombstones provided they deceased in Pinconning and are buried there. Thanks, Ray

I just looked at this message board after posting my original message a few years ago. Thank you for the info you sent. My brother and I went to the courthouse in the Pinconning area and found lots of info about the land purchase that our grandmother, Francis Chwala had made many years ago. Our grandparents supposedly had 18 children and our mother was one of the younger ones. Her name was Louisa. Her sisters were Cecilia, Marie, Betty, and some older ones.. whom we never met. Her brothers were Jack, Michael (who changed their last names to Belmont). Does any of this ring a bell with you? All lived in Michigan, several in the Detroit/Redford area. Any info you've gathered will be most interesting to hear about so please contact me. J.Velvick

Thank you for the info about the Michigan Chwala families. Have you discovered more in your searches? My mother, Louise Chwala Cuchetti, said that there were 18 children born in Pinconning to Michael and Francis. She was one of the youngest. I'd like to compare notes with you and perhaps fill in some blanks if I can. Sincerely, Joan Cuchetti Velvick

Surnames: Chwala (Chivala) in Michigan
My husband's grandmother was Marie Chwala (Chivala) and she was the oldest child of Michael and Frances Chwala. She was born in Bohemia in 1893(approx) I would love to hear any info you have. Marie died young and put her children in orphanage before her death but letter from orhanage lists Louise as her sister along with a few other names. I recently found a record of funeral for Michael Chwala (Chivala) date of death June 10, 1938 and he is buried in Pinconning Catholic Cemetery however from information on Bay Co Cemeteries this cemetery St Anne's Catholic Cemetery was abandoned 30 or more years ago and is now private property. It says moved to St Mary's Catholic Cemetery Mt Forest MI. I don't know if this means the bodies and all the information about them was moved or what exactly.

Michael Chwala died June 10 1938 and was buried in Pinconning Catholic Cemetery which has been abandoned for over 30 years. Info I have says moved to St Mary's AKA St Anne's Polish Catholic AKA Mt Calvery Catholic Cemetery. His funeral service was At St Floriacia (Not sure of spelling) Church no mention of Frances on record of funeral.

Do you have any information about when or how Francis died? I was told by Evelyn Belmont wife of John/Jack back in the early 70's that she was hit by a train.

THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS. ABOUT 10 YRS. AGO I ORDERED A TOMBSTONE FOR FRANCIS CHWALA AT THE CATHOLIC CEMETARY IN PINCONNING. THE CEMETARY GOES BY 2 NAMES (I THINK ST. ANNE'S AND ST.MICHAELS). MY MOTHER,LOUISA, HAD SENT $ TO A FRIEND IN PINCONNING TO PURCHASE A TOMBSTONE BACK IN THE 1940-50'S BUT IT WAS NEVER DONE DUE TO FINANCIAL HARDSHIP. WHEN I DISCOVERED THIS, I HAD ONE INSTALLED. IF YOU FIND IT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A PHOTO. I LIVE IN CALIF. AND HAVEN'T TRAVELED TO THE CEMETARY IN SEVERAL YEARS. HOW ARE YOU RELATED...WHICH SISTER/BROTHER ARE YOUR PARENTS/GRANDPARENTS? MY MOTHER IS LOUISA CHWALA CUCHETTI AND SHE DIED IN THE 1980'S. HER SISTERS (WHOM I MET)WERE CELIA, MARIE AND BETTY; BROTHERS WERE JACK AND MICHAEL.THERE WERE SEVERAL MORE SPREAD OUT IN THE US. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP! JOAN VELVICK
