Chubey - Are you looking too?
For several years many of us have been trying to put together the Chubey Family Tree. The Chubeys are a very large family with a colourful history. Just thought it was time to get a message board going so we could communicate in a central location. Looking forward to hearing from all of you! My ancestors are starting with the oldest generation: Jack/Simeon/Tymko/Nellie/William Immigrated from Ivane Puste Ukraine (as spelled by Map Quest)

Re: Chubey - Are you looking too?
I have been looking for information concerning my great gram and gramps, Andrew Chubey and Mary Faryna Chubey. Andrew was born 17 July 1877 in Ivana Poosta, Province of Borshchiv in the Ukraine. He emmigrated to Canada in 1899 arriving in Montreal. He made his way to Winnipeg, MB and then to Stromberg, MB where he met Mary Faryna and they were married. Mary Faryna emmigrated from the Village of Strakivche, Province of Borshchiv in 1906. Their oldest son, Nicholas (Nick) was born in Stromberg. Andrew then proceeded to Vermilion, Alberta by train to settle and picked a homestead in the District of Northern Valley. Andrew and Mary had an additionla eleven children - two who died in infancy - John, Bill, Pauline (my grandmother), Lena, Harry, Mike, Kathleen, Helen and Anne. The original homestead is still owned by a Chubey, although the old buildings are now gone. would love to share information with you if you like. Derece

Re: Chubey - Are you looking too?
Sorry, but I do not have a George Chubey in my tree. The three Chubey siblings that emigrated to Canada and are related to me are Andrej Czubej (Andrew Chubey), Fedor Chubey and Anna Chubey. They came from Ivane Puste, Borschiv, Ukraine (Galicia). But I will keep my eye out as the Chubey family is quite large and I was told that another family member lived in Manitoba but no name was given.

Re: Chubey - Are you looking too?
Was Chubey an anglicized name for Czubej? I think some foreign names were anglicized by Immigration people. Thanks. Chuck

Re: Chubey - Are you looking too?
From the books I have read on the emigration of Ukrainians to Canada, many anglicized their names while others changed their names completely. My gradnmother used to call her siblings "those damn Chubejskis" although I have not been able to find any concrete evidince that this was their actual last name. These name changes do hamper geneaological searches of family. Also, census recorders often did not spell the names correctly. My great grandfather's name appears on his land patent application as Andrej Czubej, but as Andrew Chubey on the 1916 Canada Census.
