Hello, my mother was Lillian Chown, (b.1936)of York, England. Her parents were Reginald Percy Chown and Hilda Mary. ReginaldPercy had three sisters Florence, Laura and Beatrice (and one that died as a child, Lily). He had two brothers Fred and Horace (I think there may have been a third). Reginald Percy's father was John Charles Chown - he came to York with the army from Canterbury . In Canterbury, before coming to York he married Julia Miles. I can probably find dates if you would like to know them.

Yep, that's me. I'm Sharon's son. I'm the older one, Jason is the younger one. Mom never talked about him and I didn't even know about her younger brother Robert either until just a few years ago.

Is your mom Sharron ? The Aunt who chastised you by chance Linda ? Reason I ask is that My mom is Nancy. She was Clarence Chown JR's oldest daughter. Its sad that you never got to meet him. He and the person he married after your grandmother built a kids camp and vocational college that touched thousands of people. I was too at the reunion.

Sadly I have never met the man but I am related, he is my grandfather on my mother's side.

My mother never spoke of him when I was growing up and her mother had married a Clarence Riddell after she and Clarence Chown had split up, so when other parts of the family would say something about Grandpa Clarence, I assumed they had meant Clarence Riddell. I was not until I started doing some family research several years ago that I even knew my mother's maiden name was Chown. When I tried to contact Clarence Chown after finding this out I was chastised by one of my aunts about contacting him. So while I had wanted to know more about him I left it alone so as not to create family problems.

I'm envious that you got to spend time with him but I am glad that you have good things to say about him also.

Trying to establish if my ancestor Hannah Young was a 'Chown' prior to her marriage. Online parish records seem slim to none online. If there are any Chown family history researchers out there I would be most grateful of any assistance you could give me. Looking for information about Henry CHOWN who married Lydia Louise PAYNE in 1847 (Greenwich) and they then emigrated with their 2 year old son Edmund Henry to Melbourne in 1852 on the 'SS Great Britain'. They lived in Clunes and Ballarat where they ran the Freemasons Arms with Lydia's brother Issac.

I think another passenger from SS Great Britain may be connected to them - George GINGELL (a Carpenter) travelled alone but had married Lydia CHOWN in London earlier in 1852. She arrived in Melbourne in 1857 along with son Thomas George (b1853)and joined George in Ballarat where they raised a large famiy.

Does any one have any information about any of these people - especially the possible connection between Henry CHOWN & Caroline CHOWN ??

Hi I'm a chown! and I think your Edwin Cuckow was my grandfathers father I have my grandfather's birth cert with a Edwin Cuckow as the named father with emily chown as mother, my grandfather Edwin Chown was born in Peckham in 1876 but I have no cross reference for him can you help?

Hi,
An example - There are 88 individuals with the surname CHOWNS in the 1881 census of England - mostly born in Oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire.
Your best way to find where your particular family originated is to trace each generation back systematically using birth, marriage & death certificates and the censuses.

I am Judy Graham Chown, wife of Steven Franklin Chown, also a descendent of Roger Chown and Sarah Thorn. We live in Portland, Oregon. We visited Devon in 2005, very beautiful. I am seeking the St Mary's Rotherhithe and St John Horsleydown parish registers. My Chowne ancestors have baptisms listed at both churches - St Johns from 1772 until 1803 and then St Mary's 1805-1829.
I am trying to find the marriage of Hannah Rae Chowne and Richard Robinson which I believe took place in around 1806.
Has anyone got any idea how I might access the registers?

I am seeking Hannah Rae Chowne born about 1780 in England. I can't find her on any parish register, but I know she married Richard Robinson and had Mary Elizabeth, Richard, Louisa, William Chowne in England before they left for Australia in 1814. They had more children in Australia but I can find NO info about their lives in England.

I tried to reply to you a minute ago - but don't know if it got through. My grandmother's childhood nickname was Herbert, named after your grandfather Herbert. There is a story in my great uncles' memoirs about Herbert always being late at meal times. My grandmother's grandmother was Ellen Rose Chown and her great grandfather was Thomas Chown, who was married to Mary Frances Jeffrey and then Mrs Knight.

Thomas Collingwood Chown 1844-1905 married my 2 x great grandfather's niece, Marie Anne Nixey, daughter of William George Nixey, the inventor of the world known Nixey's black lead, knife polish, blue wash bags, and a revolving till. I've just begun putting together info on Marie Annes life as I discovered her sisters donated a new organ to the church in Slough in memory of her. Thomas C. Chown died in the Hastings area in 1905. I have found Eugenia (his 2nd wife) in all censuses from 1861 to 1911, she was born In Hurstpierpoint, Sussex 1847. She died 1926 aged 69.
As William was the son of Thomas and Marie Anne, this means we are related, the common link being John Nixey and Elizabeth Randell who married at St Brides, Fleet Street in London in 1794. As I said, your line descends through William George Nixey born Winkfield, Berkshire in 1812, I descend from his brother Joseph born at Slough in 1814. Joseph was a tailor. I have the Nixey family back to the turn of the 1600's and 1700's. I hope this is all of interest to you and I sincerely hope to hear from you in the near future.

I am trying to connect the William Chowen family to its origin in Devon England. My Great Grandfather William Chowen came to St.Marys Ontario from Devonshire England. I was led to this site by a perfect DNA match to Steven Franklin Chown approximately 6 generations back. Perhaps there is a change in spelling on one side or the other. My Great Grand mother was Agnes Chown 1863-1953.
She was born in Shinefield Reading Berks.

On marraige she moved to Cosham Hampshire. Her family go back three generations in Buckinghamshire

Hi my Gt Grandfathe was Thomas Collingwood Chown born in 1816 in Stepney. He became a very successful merchant trading with the Gambia. His parents are Thomas Chown (master mariner) and Ann ?Collingwood.

Thomas C Chown married twice and had several children one of whom was Herbert Chown my grandfather. They seem to originate from Middx. Does anyone have a connection with them. TCC died in Steyning Sussex innnn 1915 aged 99

The Thomas Collingwood Chown you refer to marrying Marie Ann Nixey was in fact my grandfather's half brother.
for the sake of Clarification I will call him Thomas C Chown.
His father was Thomas Collingwood Chown (snr) born in 1816 in Stepney - he and his son (Thomas C Chown) traded with the Gambia for peanuts and it would seem became very wealthy. living in Hanover Square etc.
I am just getting back into doing the Chowns, i stopped because i was becoming obsessed!
I went to St. Leonards on sea about 18 months ago to see the house where Thomas C lived. I have a print out of a couple of letters to The Times.

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa -- Genevieve Iola Chown, 85, West Liberty, formerly of Nichols, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, after an extended illness.

Services are at the Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home, Lone Tree. Burial will be at Nichols Public Cemetery. Pallbearers are Timothy Burns, Daniel Burns, Kathrine Olsen, David Burns, Lance McGinn, Amanda Hawker, Jeff Chown, Kelly Chown, Ben Chown and Jennifer Chown. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at the Nichols United Methodist Church, Nichols.

Visitation with a Rebekah's service and Eastern Star service, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Chown was born on Nov. 3, 1916, in Joy, Ill., the daughter of David Glenn and Maggie Belle Bixby Brown. She married Louis 'Peanut' Wilbur Chown on Feb. 11, 1939, at the Methodist parsonage, Muscatine. He preceded her in death in 1990.

She was schooled at Clancy Lake rural school, she graduated from eighth grade May 17, 1930, in Aledo, Ill.

She came to Iowa to work.

She and her husband lived four miles south of Nichols. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Nichols United Methodist Church since 1940; charter member of the womens group now called the United Methodist Women; Rebekah?s Lodge since 1938, now the Iowa City Lodge No. 416; Order of Eastern Star since Oct. 24, 1947, now the Emma Beckman No. 445 of Columbus City.

Survivors include two sons, David Chown and his wife, Barbara, of Nichols and Lt. Col. Doug Chown and his wife, Marcia, of Enid, Okla.; two daughters, Wiladine Burns of Bettendorf and Audrey McGinn and her husband, Paul, of Greenville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, Timothy Burns, Daniel Burns, Kathrine Olsen, David Burns, Lance McGinn, Amanda Hawker, Jeff Chown, Kelly Chown, Ben Chown and Jennifer Chown; five great-grandchildren, Kyle Burns, Lane Burns, Joseph Burns, Kara Hawker and Kamille Hawker; a sister, Vernabelle 'Peggy' Mathais of Fruitland; and six nephews, Pete, Jim, Max, Dana, Kevan and William.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Leland Brown; a sister, Phyllis Jerrel; and a son-in-law, Joseph Burns.

Hi Judy, the Chowns runs through my grandmothers side the Jacobs. My grandmother Edna Hutchison Winter (nee jacobs). She was born 14 Feb in Junee NSW and she died 1985 in Canberra.
Her parents were Emily Chown Pearse b.6 June 1883 Argoon NSW, she died 14 November 1956, in Deneliquin NSW. Her father was Frank Page Jacobs b.24 April 1884 Molong NSW. He died 13 July 1916 Junee NSW. Emily's mother was Elizabeth Chown, she was born 16 May 1814, in Devon England, she died 2 October 1852 in Portland Victoria.
My parents are Ron and Diana Winter, my dad was born 10 january 1956. My mum was Diana Cochrane she was born 20 December 1956. Vicki

i, I purchased a photo of Ernest with two other friends at a local flea market(Eugene, OR). Ernest was born July 23, 1897 in Allen, Dixon, Nebraska. His parents were Frank Leslie Chown and Mary Elizabeth (Green). He married Theresa (unknown) and had at least one son, Eldon (1928-2006).

Hi My name is Diane Woods nee Chown, some years ago a letter arrived at my parents home, could you have been that person. I wanted to reply but for some reason my Dad destroyed the letter.I have not long started to my family tree but remember the letter. Does anyone know if the last name Chowns is common in England or Wales. Ancestry.com says that is where the last name came from, although my grandfather mentioned his parents being from Germany and then moving to England. Please help because I'd like to know where my last name originated from.

My grand mother was leona Ellenor Chowan she had two brothers, she married a Charles Penn In nebraska and had 2 girls Evelyn and Dorthy ann and a boy named Leo Penn I have not been able to find any thing out about the family of chowns I have gone to nebraska Wymore and found marriage certificates etc reply to lighthouse180@charter.net
