All I know about my greatgrandfather is that he came to Chicago around 1860. I would like to find out more about him and his family prior to that.

The surname of my greatgrandfather was Chochol. One brother of my greatgrandfather was emigrated to USA. he lives in east part of Poland. from 1794 to 1918 this part of Poland was under Russian occupation. Many documents (administration documents) for citizens was in russian language. In 1918 this documents was translated to polish language, frequentlly with mistakes. From 1918 in our family (big family) we used surnames Chochol, Chachol and Hachol (phonetic identically, depending on translation)because in russian all was Xoxol (x is russian h or "ch"; h and "ch" is phonetic h). Maybe we have the same ancestors. With best regards Andrzej (Andrew) Hachol, Pl 51-645 Wroclaw, Canaletto str. 15

Hi, my greatgrandmother was Pauline Chochol (born 1881), she went by Hochul. She was from Dembowicz, Poland. She had a brother Andrzej (born 1873). I believe their father was Szgymond.
Any relationship?

My Jan Chochol never lived in Chicago. From New York he went to Western Pa. to work in the coal mines, from there he went to Lorain, Oh. to work in the steel mill. Thank you.

Volyne, which is where my ancestor Jan Chochol came from, is in South Bohemia 11 km south of Strakonice. Don't know what it was then, or the town you talk about, but now its Czech Republic. Different Jan's.
