Hi. I have just begun to research my (deceased) father's surname. He and my mother immigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1952 from Poland after an extensive search for surviving relatives after WWII. He was in a concentration camp (POW) for 2 years and my mother on a German labor farm before the Americans liberated them.
What I have discovered so far is that 'Chmiel' means Hops and 'arz' means son of. So apparently these individuals had something to do with Hops, either merchants, farmers or brewers. I have also come across records of individuals with this name being of hebrew persuasion either coming to American in the early 1900's with the first name of Moeshe or coming from Israel in the mid 1970's. My father said his family was/is Roman Catholic. Also I don't believe this is a very common name. Supposedly there are only about 13,000 of them in Poland so it seems a very small percentage verses the population there. Also I learned that the surname can be found in Russia as well as Austria but probably in smaller numbers.

How interesting your research is! As you can tell from the posts on the message board, I am researching the Dzieweczynski line but of course, the Chmielarz hooks into it so I would love to share information with you. Please email me when you get a chance.

As I have researched, I have come across the following surname spellings: Chmielarz, Chnielarz, Chmelarz, Millarz and Mielaz.

I have her Elizabeth's parents as : Stanley Chmielarz and Frances Wojtdszek.

Add Dzieweczynski to the pot and we have alphabet soup!

Hope to hear from you. Kathy Meyer

I appreciate the insight into the name Chmielarz . My great great great grandmother's maiden name was Marie Chmelarz of Drachov in Southern Bohemia, ca 1800. Her father was Vaclav Chmelarz, also of Drachov. I now know something about the meaning of the name, and possible origin in Poland.
